Written by Katie Morford Tuesday, 26 June 2012 18:10The Marion swim team played host to four area swim teams at Saturday’s home quadrangular. Swim teams participating included Herington, Solomon and Abilene.
Marion won the team competition with 533.5 points, followed by the Abilene Wave Runners 452.5, Herington Whalers 248 and Solomon Swim Team 221
Individual results were not available at press time.
The meet was Marion’s last one at home. They are slated to travel to Hillsboro Saturday before going to Abilene for the league meet...
Written by Katie Morford Tuesday, 26 June 2012 18:09The Hillsboro swim team overcame much smaller numbers to achieve a third-place finish at Saturday’s Hesston meet, their largest meet yet this year.
Lindsborg took top honors with 670 points and Peabody took second with 291.5. Hillsboro came in a close third with 282.5, beating out Hesston’s 257 points.
“There was a lot of competition and fast races,” said coach Courtney Fast. “We were down 25 swimmers (mostly due to Tabor Junior Camp).
“With half our team gone, the lineup was a bit different from normal and I had kids stepping up to swim in events that they are not used to.”

Pine Edge Golf Course, rural Goessel, played host to its eighth annual putting tournament this weekend with 36 participants vowing to win a lawn mower donated by Hustler Turf Equipment. While no one made the qualifying distance to win the mower, the top five putters were (pictured, from left): Mike Cavanaugh, fourth; Ray Brundige, first; Dale Dick, second; Tory Hendrix, third, and Chet Roberts, fifth. A two-person scramble following the putting tournament was won by Clyde Goering and Anthony Jenkens, followed by: Art Abby and Ray Brundige; JC Saunders and Kent Campbell; Dale Dick and DeAnn Huxman, and Joe Landers and Dan Dundas. A noon meal was donated by Crossroads Credit Union, Goessel.
Written by Hillsboro Free Press Tuesday, 26 June 2012 18:07Jorge Hanschu, a fifth-grader at Hillsboro Elementary this past year, displays the blue ribbon and medal he won in the 11-12-year-old division in softball throw at the Hershey State Track Meet in Hutchinson this weekend. His throw of 170 feet, 1 inch easily outdistanced the second place toss of 153-8. Jorge’s other two throws measured 161-5 and 157-8. The top three finishes at local Hershey meets qualify for state competition. Jorge won the softball throw at Hillsboro in May with a local record distance of 159 feet. At state, he competed against 25 other qualifiers. Jorge, son of Jayson and Jan Hanschu, is now waiting for word from Hershey officials whether he qualified for a trip to the national meet in Hershey, Pa., Aug. 2-5...
Written by Hillsboro Free Press Tuesday, 26 June 2012 18:06Lance Sawyer will be offering camps for local youth from fifth grade through high school as he prepares for his first year as head football coach at Hillsboro High School.
All high schoolers intending to play football this fall are asked to attend a non-contact camp from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. July 9 through 13 at Joel H. Wiens Stadium.
“Our focus will be on teaching position fundamentals, introducing our offensive schemes and bringing the team together,” Sawyer said.
“We will install all alignments, stances and keys needed to execute out complete systems.”
Sawyer is offering a one-day camp July 13 for youth entering the fifth through eighth grades, also at the stadium.
