Small bodies, big moves rule the day at Hillsboro

Nearly 250 wrestlers from 20 youth wrestling clubs from around the state participated in the 14th annual Hillsboro Takedown Tournament Saturday in Brown Gymnasium.

Goessel athletes dominate Wheat State all-league list

The Goessel Bluebirds dominated this year’s Wheat State League post-season volleyball honors with five players on the all-league first team and a sixth player receiving honorable mention.

Both Centre and Peabody-Burns were represented by one player on the first team and one on the second team. Three Cougars received honorable mention as did one Warrior.

Bluebirds named to the first team were seniors Tia Goertzen, Alex Hiebert, Jessica Harvey and Johanna Hoffman and freshman Page Hiebert. Sophomore Erin Brubaker received honorable mention.

The Bluebirds finished the season with a 29-10 record. They played for the sub-state championship and a state tournament berth, but lost to Olpe, who went on to win the state title.

WSL releases picks for all-league football

Area schools were well-represented for all-league football honors for the Wheat State League this season as determined by the coaches.

Centre, which finished the year 5-4 overall, placed two players on the first team, senior Justin Dienes and junior Kyle Methvin. Houston Svoboda, a senior, received honorable mention.

Goessel’s 6-4 team was represented by three seniors on the first team: Trey Schmidt, Nic Buller and Shane Goerzen. Zach Showalter, a junior, received honorable mention.

Three seniors also were selected for the first team from Peabody-Burns’ 7-3 squad. They were Hunter Pickens, Tommy Morris and Lucas Larsen. A fourth senior, Austin Savage, received honorable mention.

Hillsboro Wrestling Club plans parent meeting Nov. 6

Parents of children between the ages of 4 and 18 years are invited to an information and sign-up meeting at 7 p.m. Tues­day, Nov. 6, for the 19th year of the Hillsboro Wrestling Club.

The meeting will be in the Technology Lecture Hall at Hillsboro High School. The agenda includes signing up wrestlers for the new season, collecting fees and discussing upcoming wrestling events.

Last year, about 30 youth participated regularly in the program with four certified coaches providing the training, according to Scott O’Hare, club director and head coach. The club hosted its 13th annual tournament and competed in several other area tournaments.

Hillsboro youth excels at national wrestling tourney

DevinGomezWrestling Devin Gomez of Hillsboro models the form that enabled him to win second place at 85 pounds and first place at 90 pounds at the preseason national tournament in St. Joseph, Mo., this weekend. Devin Gomez, a fifth-grader at Hillsboro Elementary School and a member of the Hillsboro Wrestling Club, competed in a preseason national tournament this past weekend in St. Joseph, Mo.

“He actually competed in two separate brackets in the 10 & Under division,” said Scott O’Hare, club director. “He finished second in the 85-pound weight class and won the championship in the 90-pound weight class.”

Through the day, Gomez competed against wrestlers from Iowa, Missouri, Florida, Illinois and Indiana.

“Between the two brackets, Devin finished with a record of 7-1,” O’Hare said. “His lone loss was a 1-point decision to a young wrestler from Florida in the championship match in the 85-pound bracket.
