County youth soccer teams go undefeated this spring

MCUnited2nd3rdGradeTeam The Marion County United Soccer Club fielded two traveling teams for play in Herington and Council Grove this spring. Both teams achieved an undefeated season. “What makes these teams and young people remarkable is that they come from the different communities of Hillsboro and Marion, and yet truly were ‘United’ on the soccer field,” said Stephanie Moss who coaches both teams along with Gene Lanning. • Seventeen of the 54 entries picked Kansas to win the national title; 21 picked Ken­tucky; three picked Missouri.

• Of the 54 entries, only one (Darcy Franzen of Newton) correctly predicted Norfolk State’s first-round upset of Missouri; no one predicted Duke’s first-round loss to Lehigh.

• Only four entries correctly picked Wichita State to lose its first-round game against Virginia Commonwealth.

• All but six entries correctly picked Kansas State to beat Southern Mississippi in the first round; 19 thought KSU would beat No. 1 seed Syra­cuse, too. Two picked the Wildcats to reach the Final Four.

• The lowest seed picked to win the title was Florida, a No. 7 seed in the West Regional.

 

Gomez 5th at state wrestling tourney

For the second year in a row, elementary school student Devin Gomez, representing the Hills­boro Wrestling Club, placed in the top six in his age group and weight class at the USA Wrest­ling Kansas Kids State Cham­pionship Wrestling Tournament this weekend in Topeka.

After finishing third at state last year in the 8-and-under division, Devin move up to the 10-and-under division and placed fifth this year to become the first Hills­boro wrestler to ever place multiple times at the state tournament.

Wrestling at 76 pounds, Devin finished the tournament with a 4-2 record. He won by fall in his opening match, then lost a 4-2 decision in the quarterfinals.

Four youth wrestlers qualify for state at districts

Four Hillsboro Wrestling Club members finished in the top four in their age group and weight class at the District III Tournament in McPherson Saturday.

The four wrestlers will be representing the club this weekend at the USA Wrestling Kansas Kids State Championships at the Topeka Expocentre.

The four wrestlers that qualified for state are:

• Devin Gomez, 10 & Under, 76 pounds, 2-1, second place; he lost his finals match, 1-0;

• Nathan Simhiser, 12 & Under, 165 pounds, third place;

• Jesse Meier, 14 & Under, 150 pounds, fourth place;

• Matt Reeh, high school division, 285 pounds, first place.

Edwards signs D-I baseball letter

JakeEdwards Edwards Jacob Edwards’ dream was to play NCAA Division I baseball and now he has his chance.

The 2010 alum of Hills­boro High School has signed a national letter of intent to pitch for the Creigh­ton Univer­sity baseball team this fall.

Edwards was a starter at Cowley Community College as a freshman, finishing with a 7-1 record. He posted a 3.68 earned-run average, helping to lead the team to a 38-11 record.

Edwards will again be counted on as a starter at Cowley this season, looking to improve upon a fastball that is already in the high 80s.
