Two HWC wrestlers in top 6 at state tourney

Two of the six Hillsboro Wrestling Club qualifiers finished among the top six in their respective divisions at the USA Wrestling Kansas Kids State Tournament March 28-30 in Topeka.It marked the first time HWC has had two top-six wrestlers.
Leading the way was Devin Gomez, who won the 10-and-under (82 pound) division with a 4-0 record, including two pins.

Six HWC wrestlers qualify for state championships

Six wrestlers from the Hillsboro Wrestling Club placed in the top four in their bracket at the USA-Wrestling Kansas District III Tournament this past Saturday at McPherson.Their finishes qualified them for the USAW-KS Folkstyle State Championship Tournament to take place Friday and Saturday at the Topeka Expocenter.
The Hillsboro Wrestling Club state qualifiers are: Garrett Helmer, 8 and under, 61 pounds; Camden Padgett, 8 and under, 67 pounds; Connor Padgett, 8 and under, 88 pounds; Devin Gomez, 10 and under, 82 pounds; 12 and under, 165 pounds, Cyle Gautschi; Levi Mendoza, 14 and under, 175 pounds.

Dates reset for BBBS Bowl for Kids’ Sake fundraiser

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Marion County has rescheduled its annual Bowl For Kids’ Sake fundraiser.The new dates and times will be 9 p.m. Friday, April 19, and 1 p.m. Saturday, April 20, said Jackie Rice, BBBS director.
“The event had to be rescheduled because of the snowstorms in early March,” she said “Bowl for Kids’ Sake is a fun and easy way to help Big Brothers Big Sisters.”
The event, she said, is based on forming teams that solicit pledges from family, friends and coworkers to support BBBS.
In return, the team gets to bowl, enjoy refreshments, win prizes and receive a free T-shirt.
“The bowling event is the ‘thank you’ for raising the pledges,” she said.

Cooperation results in city baseball field improvements

The idea for a new scoreboard started about a year ago during baseball season, according to Casey Case, project organizer.
“We heard some complaints about how hard it was to see and read (the scoreboard),” he said.
After talking with other businesses in town, Case said, it was decided to replace the scoreboard that was more than 25 years old.
“We got some prices and it ended up more expensive (than first anticipated),” he said. “We didn’t count on a big 8-inch I-beam that had to go into concrete in the ground.”

Young wrestlers compete at districts

Fourteen members of the Hillsboro Wrestling Club competed Saturday at the District III East Sub-District Tournament in Junction City.This was the first tournament in the USA Wrestling-Kansas State Qualifying Series. The top four finishers in each bracket automatically qualified for the District III Tournament this Saturday in McPherson.
The top four wrestlers in each bracket there will qualify for the USAW-KS Folkstyle State Championship Tournament, March 29-30 at the Topeka Expocenter.
