Tabor tennis falls short in Nebraska

The Tabor College tennis teams competed at two Nebraska locations over the weekend, but came up short at Doane College Friday and Concordia Univer­sity Saturday.

The Bluejays took on Doane at Woods Tennis Center in Lincoln. The men lost, 7-2, and the women lost, 5-4.

Recording wins for the Blue­jay men were Jared Friesen and Darryn Davis competing in No. 3 doubles with a 9-7 victory over Chance Hohensee and Sam Tipton.

Tabor’s Sam Brucks defeated Muijj Ghani in No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-3.

In other doubles action, the No. 1 team of David Simmet and Kelyn Vix dropped an 8-6 decision to Ross Schulenberg and Tyler Johnson, while Nate Panttaja and Tyler Dort lost 8-1 to Dylan Ramey and Sebastian Gardefjord in No. 2 doubles.

In singles, No. 1 Simmet lost to Schulenberg, 6-1, 6-0. Vix fell to Gardefjord 6-1, 7-5 in No. 2 singles. In No. 3 singles, Dort was defeated by Johnson, 7-5, 6-4. Panttaja lost to Ramey 6-1, 6-0, and Jake Brucks lost 6-0, 6-1 to Tipton.

Leading the Tabor women was Becky Faber, who was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Kendra Ritter in No. 1 singles.

Also winning for Tabor were: Anna Friesen over Allison Pfeifer 6-0, 6-4 in No. 2 singles, and Katie Becker over Nicole Baranko 6-2, 7-6 (10-8) in No. 5 singles.

Tabor’s fourth win came in No. 3 doubles, when Karly Lindroth-Yates and Krista Schmidt defeated Eavan Lynch and Nicole Baranko, 8-4.

The No. 1 doubles pair of Faber and Friesen lost to Jade Patterson and Pfeifer, 8-5, while Meredith Voran and Becker lost to Ritter and Kayla Bames­berger, 8-4, in No. 2 doubles.

In other matches, Lindroth-Yates lost to Patterson, 6-4, 6-2, Voran lost to Bamesberger and Schmidt lost to Lynch, 7-5, 7-5.

Concordia—Tabor traveled to Seward, Neb., Saturday to take on Concordia University. The Bluejay men lost 5-4, and the women lost 6-3.

In men’s doubles, No. 1 Sim­met and Vix edged Cole Egger and Nathan Wingfield, 8-6. No. 2 Jake Brucks and Sam Brucks defeated Mike McCartney and Joel Kaldahl, 8-4, while Friesen and Davis lost 8-3 to Jonathan Douglas and Joe Vanderveld.

In No. 1 singles, Simmet withdrew with an ankle injury after dropping the first set 6-0 to Wingfield. Simmet was leading 4-0 in the second set when the injury occurred. Coach John Ruder said Simmet is expected to return soon.

In other matches, Vix lost to Egger, 6-4, 6-4, while Dort defeated McCartney 6-0, 3-6 (10-4). Panttaja lost to Kaldahl 6-3, 3-6 (7-10), while Jake Brucks lost to Douglas 6-4, 6-4. Sam Brucks defeated Vanderveld, 6-0, 6-1.

With the loss, the men are 0-3 for the season.

In women’s doubles, No. 1 Faber and Friesen edged Katelyn Koll and Lindsea Vaudt, 8-5. Becker and Voran lost to Chelsea Haack and Grace Hollenbeck, 8-0, while Lindroth-Yates and Schmidt defeated Mikaela Barz and Liz Kjellsen, 8-6.

Tabor’s only win in singles was Becker over Kohl at the No. 5 spot, 3-6, 6-3 (11-9).

In other matches, Faber lost to Koll, 2-6, 6-2 (4-10); Friesen lost to Haack, 6-2, 6-1; Lindroth-Yates lost to Vaudt, 4-6, 0-6; Voran lost to Hollenbeck, 4-6, 6-2 (5-10); and Schmidt lost to Kjellsen, 6-4, 5-7.

With the loss, the women are 0-3 for the season.

“We had several three-set matches that could have given us wins in the women’s matches at both Doane and Concordia, and in the men’s loss at Concordia,” Ruder said. “The players played and competed well.”

“It was a good weekend of team building and lots of fun.”

Coming—Tabor will host a rescheduled match with Central Christian College at noon Wednesday before hosting John Brown University Saturday. Action is set to begin at 9 a.m.
