TC volleyball goes 3-1 at OCU tourney

The Tabor volleyball team opened its season with a bang, going 3-1 at the Oklahoma City University tournament this weekend.

Southwestern Assemblies of God—Tabor left it all on the court in its final match of the tournament Saturday, winning a hard-fought battle over SAG in four sets. The Bluejays split the first two sets, 27-29 and 29-27, before winning the last two, 26-24 and 25-20.

The dynamic Vogts duo fueled Tabor’s offense with Jessie scoring 14 kills and Katie 13. Courtney Erwin added 11, helped by setter Hollister Wolf with 47 assists. The Bluejays’ 57 match kills is their highest yet this season.

Amy Jo Maphet anchored the back row with 15 digs and Abbey Burns added 11. At the net, Jessica Wollenberg, Katelin Horstick and Erwin recorded three blocks a piece.

Oklahoma City University—Tabor took care of business against the host team Saturday in four sets, going 25-17, 24-26, 25-21 and 25-15 to earn its second tournament win.

Katelin Horstick and Jessie and Katie Vogts combined for 38 of Tabor’s 52. Setter Hollister Wolf contributed 39 assists.

Wolf led the defense with 10 digs. Abbey Burns added nine and Amy Jo Maphet seven. Katie Vogts and Jessica Wollenburg each recorded five blocks.

College of the Ozarks—Tabor bounced back from a first-round defeat in Game 2 of the tournament Friday to defeat the Ozarks 25-23, 25-21, 31-33 and 25-22 to gain the team’s first win of the season against a team earning national attention.

After taking the first two sets, the Jays missed a sweep in a lengthy third set. But they took the fourth to secure the win.

Both Jessie Vogts and Katie Vogts posted double-digit kills with 14 and 13, respectively. Freshman Katelin Horstick and sophomore Courtney Erwin added 10 each.

Hollister Wolf fueled a strong offensive attack with 49 assists leading to 55 kills. She also managed 17 digs, with Amy Jo Maphet and Whitney Maple each adding 15. Horstick recorded eight blocks and Erwin five.

Lubbock Christian—Tabor got off to a rocky Friday, falling in three sets, 15-25, 14-25, 17-25, to the Chaps, who were ranked second in the SAC preseason polls.

Katie Vogts led the offense with 15 kills while Jessie Vogts added six. Hollister Wolf recorded 24 assists, which led to 27 kills. Wolf tied Amy Jo Maphet with eight digs. Shelby Spencer and Katelin Horstick had two blocks each.

Coming—Tabor will ride its momentum to a road matchup Sept. 1 with a MidAmerica Nazarene University team ranked No. 15 in the NAIA.
