Tabor tennis teams split with KWU, Bethany

The Tabor men’s and women’s tennis teams traded roles this week, earning splits against conference foes Kansas Wesleyan Thursday and Bethany College April 19.

Kansas Wesleyan —The Bluejay men picked up a 7-2 victory, splitting the doubles’ matches and going 3-1 in singles.

In No. 1 doubles, David Simmet and Clay Shewey lost, 5-8, but the duo of Tyler Dort and Kelyn Vix won, 9-8, in the No. 2 doubles. Victors in singles included Simmet (6-3, 6-1), Vix (6-0, 6-0) and Dort (6-2, 6-0). Shewey lost (4-6, 5-7).

The Tabor women fell, 5-4, going 1-2 in doubles and 3-3 in singles.

Amanda Faber and Amanda Brown won No. 1 doubles, 8-4. Losing was No. 2 Rebecca Faber and Anna Friesen (8-3) and No. 3 Marissa Hiett and Katie Becker (8-6). In singles, earning victories were A. Faber (6-4, 6-0), Brown (2-6, 6-0, 6-0) and Friesen (2-6, 6-3, 6-3). Losing were B. Faber (2-6. 1-6), Hiett (4-6, 6-7) and Becker (0-6, 2-6).

“I thought we actually started fairly strong in doubles, but we had trouble finishing toward the end,” said coach Chad Gayer. “I thought Amanda Faber played some of her best tennis against KW. She has proven to be one of the elite players in our conference.”

Bethany College —Tabor’s men lost, 0-9, but the women picked up a 7-2 victory over the Swedes.

In doubles, winners included No. 1 Amanda Faber and Amanda Brown (8-3) and No. 2 Rebecca Faber and Anna Friesen (8-6). No. 3 Marissa Hiett and Katie Becker lost (8-9).

In singles, winners were A. Faber (6-0. 6-1), B. Faber (7-5, 6-1), Brown (6-2, 6-2), Friesen (6-2, 6-3) and Hiett (6-0, 6-1). Becker lost (5-8).

“Both teams played pretty well against Bethany,” said coach Chad Gayer. “They have a very tough men's team, but I thought we posted some strong scores against them.

“Our women did a great job of taking care of business from the start.”

Coming —The Bluejays were scheduled to play at Bethel College April 23, with the men hosting Southwestern Christian University Thursday.
