The Hillsboro tennis team opened its season with a fourth-place finish at the Conway Springs quad Thursday.

The home team won the title with 24 points, followed by McPherson with 17, Wichita Trinity with 14 and Hillsboro 5.

Grant Shewey, the Trojans’ two-time state qualifier, won one of three matches—an 8-7 (7-2) win over Ross Rasmussen of Conway Springs—for three of Hillsboro’s points. Harry Faber won one of three matches at No. 2 singles for two team points. Faber defeated Austin Brown of Trinity, 8-4.

Going 0-3 for the Trojans were Daniel Gray and Jeff Pritchard, playing No. 1 doubles, and Ty Carey and Tyler Funk, playing No. 2 doubles.

“The guys gave a good effort, but I think a number of them would say they didn’t play as well as they have been playing in practice,” coach Stuart Holmes said. “It was only the first meet, so we’ll keep working hard at improving each day.”

Coming—The Trojans will be hosting the Hillsboro Invitational Thursday at the Sports Complex. Joining HHS will be Chapman, Circle, Conway Springs, Hutch Trinity, Smoky Valley and Sterling.

Matches begin at 3 p.m.
