A pair of costly turnovers marred a strong effort by Tabor College during the opening contest of the season on Saturday.
Ottawa came to Reimer Field with a losing streak against the Bluejays that covered the past three seasons, but left with a 35-26 victory.
Tabor opened the scoring with a touchdown 4:17 into the game on a 1-yard quarterback keeper by DeJaun Jones. Ottawa senior Jermaine Thomas blocked the extra-point attempt, but the Bluejays led 6-0.

The women’s squad had three runners out but still placed sixth out of 14 teams in its first full-distance run of the season.
“We were not at full strength for this meet,” coach Karol Hunt said. “Shelby Miller, Amber Wiens and Tesheena Ruzinsky were not able to compete because of injuries.”
Liz Kleinsasser and Heidi Schmidt placed 1-2 for the second straight week. Kleinsasser placed fifth overall at 20 minutes, 8 seconds, while Schmidt finished 23rd at 21:51.
Sophomores Leah Kopper (22:38), Jera Teselle (22:41) and Carrie Schroeder (22:47) ran together, placing 39th, 40th and 41st, respectively.

The Tabor College volleyball team swept opponents Avila, Central Christian, Bacone and Stephens at the McPherson College Classic on Friday and Saturday, to open the season with a 4-0 non-conference mark.
Tabor defeated Stephens, 30-14, 30-13, 30-15, on Saturday evening. Aggressive play from middle blockers Heather Witham and Jordan Crosson stymied the Stephens attack while strong serving from Ashley Cohlmia gave Tabor early leads.

The Tabor women placed fifth in a field of 10. The men placed seventh out of nine teams.
Running a 3.2 kilometer race instead of the 5 kilometer standard used in mid-season runs, Liz Kleinsasser led the women’s team with a 12-minute, 22-second run good for sixth place among 86 finishers.
“She had an outstanding start to her college career,” coach Karol Hunt said.
Heidi Schmidt (12:59, 22nd) ran second for the Bluejays and Leah Kopper (13:44, 40th) ran third.
“Leah had a good summer of running and came into the design with a renewed desire to run,” Hunt said. “She competed really well today.“
