Falcons thrash Bluejays with turnover help

Friends University celebrated homecoming with a 53-point victory over Tabor College Satur­day night.

The Falcons came into the game ranked 21st in the NAIA, having fallen from 12th after a 26-21 loss at Bethany two weeks ago. Restoring their rank appeared to be a high priority as the Falcons outscored the Bluejays 66-13.

The Tabor College football team earned its first win under head coach Mike Gottsch, 49-28, over Oklahoma Panhandle State University Saturday night in Hillsboro.

With two runners placing in the top 10 at the Tabor College Invitational cross country meet, the Bluejay women’s team placed third out of 14 schools that visited Marion Reservoir’s Cottonwood Point on Saturday.

Liz Kleinsasser finished fifth in 19 minutes, 26 seconds and Heidi Schmidt finished eighth only 15 seconds later.

“It’s always good to compete on the home course,” coach Karol Hunt said. “Familiarity is a bonus and we don’t have to travel.”

Amber Wiens (33rd, 20:49) finished third for Tabor in her first race since being sidelined by a knee injury last spring.

On the play, quarterback Jason Aubrey dropped back to pass, was sacked, and fumbled. Cox was Johnny-on-the-spot, scooping up the ball and sprinting across the width of the field before turning toward the end zone.

The price of British currency slid markedly over the weekend, but another Sterling saw its stock rise.

In Saturday night’s showdown of 0-1 teams in Week 2 of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference season, Sterling College exercised its option and pounded Tabor, 36-27.
