TCtennisOttawaSimmet420 David Simmet, pictured here competing against Ottawa April 20, has been named a 2013 second-team all-KCAC selection. Competing in No. 1 doubles Thursday, Simmet and Tyler Dort claimed fifth place in the KCAC Individual Flights Tennis Tournaments, falling to Ottawa and then defeating Friends and Southwestern. The Tabor tennis teams competed in the KCAC Individual Flights Tennis Tournaments Thursday in Salina.

“The individual tournament was delayed all morning by rain, so only the doubles was played,” coach John Ruder said. “Our teams performed well, but were hampered by missing players.

“Only one of the men’s and one of the women’s teams remained the same as during the regular season.”

For the men, in No. 1 doubles, second-team all-KCAC selection David Simmet and Tyler Dort entered as the No. 6 seed and lost to No. 3 Ottawa, 8-3, in the quarterfinal round. Simmet and Dort then defeated No. 7 Friends, 8-1, and then No. 5 Southwestern, 8-2, to claim fifth place.

TCbsbBethanyRochasingleGm21stinn Tabor’s Kirk Rocha knocks out a single in the first inning of Game 2 at Bethany Friday as coach Mark Standiford looks on. Rocha was 3-for-4 at the plate and had two RBIs in the game, which was paused because of weather after two innings with the Bluejays in front, 4-1. Play resumed Sunday, and Tabor won, 9-1, to complete the sweep of the Swedes and clinch the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament this week. Missing a chance to control its destiny by dropping two games to Sterling a week and a half ago, the Tabor baseball team did its part by sweeping Bethany in four games last week.

Those wins, paired with a Sterling loss to McPherson, put the final puzzle pieces in place for Tabor to share the KCAC regular-season with Sterling at 24-4.

The Bluejays (36-12 overall) ended the regular season riding a seven-game win streak and, thanks to tiebreakers, have clinched the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament.

Bethany—Everything fell into place for Tabor last week in its sweep of the Swedes. The Bluejays opened Friday at Bethany with a 7-0 shutout in Game 1. Field conditions at Tabor prompted the move to Lindsborg.
