Bassett sets sights on new recruits

With four forfeits, Johnny Bassett’s first season coaching the Tabor College softball season ended abruptly and on a slightly sour note two weeks ago.But an optimistic offseason is cropping up. Having met a measure of frustration with the business-as-usual approach that relied heavily on multi-sport athletes and walk-ons to keep a team on the field, Bassett is aiming to build a roster replete with softball specialists.
Lacking pitching depth, the Bluejays’ season was severely compromised by injuries to starters Kalie George and Samatha Heldenbrand. Other injuries followed, and the season came apart at the seams when the usual rites of spring—vacations and weddings—reduced the Jays roster to eight.

The Tabor College women’s track and field team had a banner day at the Southwestern Relays Saturday in Winfield. Led by seniors Heidi Schmidt and Amber Wiens the Bluejays set three new school records.“After a season of long and hard training, it really came together for a number of athletes Saturday,” coach Dave Kroeker said.
Kroeker said that Schmidt and Wiens, who placed 1-2 in the 1,500 meter run, both outstripped the school record and provided the highlight of the meet.
Schmidt notched a new personal record six seconds faster than her previous best in 4:54.01 and Wiens stopped the clock at 4:58.50.

Tabor goes 1-3 in final week

Facing the two best teams in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference needing to win three of their final four contests to stay alive, the Bluejays went 1-3 and finished the season 7-17.A split against Kansas Wesleyan Thursday left the Bluejays with their backs against the wall when they hosted Saint Mary Saturday.
The Spires eeked out a 7-1 win that was, for six innings, contested much more closely than the final tally suggests. Saint Mary won the second game 8-2.
Saint Mary—With their post-season hopes on the line, Tabor put the ball in Travis Schafer’s hands. He mowed down the Spires in the top of the first and took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half.

Tabor competes well at home track meet

Phyllis Richert photos<p> The Tabor College track teams hosted their home meet April 16 and both squads turned in a typically strong performance.
The women’s team recorded two first-place finishes: Dana Champlin in the javelin and Breanna Wray in the hammer throw.
Both broke school records.
Wray added to her own record for the third straight week, while Champlin bettered the mark set by Lisa Wall in 1999. Champlin’s throw measured out to 129 feet, 7 inches.

Hett signs with Bluejays basketball

Former Marion High School standout Jason Hett has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Tabor College next season. He will transfer from Washburn.Hett, a 6-foot, 1-inch point guard was a first team all-MCAA selection in 2006-07, averaging 15 points and seven rebounds a game. He also was a standout in the classroom, making the honor roll throughout high school.
He joins his brother, Jared, who will be a senior on the Bluejays’ basketball team.
“I am really excited about the chance of getting a player like Jason in our program for four years,” said Micah Ratzlaff, Tabor head coach.
