Tabor athletes compete at Emporia qualifier

The Tabor men’s and women’s track teams traveled to Emporia State University Saturday for the very competitive Sam Williams Twilight Qualifier.

Top-10 finishers included Samantha Van Ranken in the women’s javelin, who took fourth with a toss of 125 feet, one inch; Michael Klaassen, who placed fifth in the men’s hammer (159-06); Jasmine Peggese, who came in sixth in the women’s hammer with a season best throw (146-01); and James Dotson, who placed seventh in the men’s 400-meter dash (52.35).

They had no additional qualifiers for national competition.

Coming —The Bluejays are scheduled to compete at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana, May 24-26.

TCbsbNAIAtourVsOBUSemiKobyTempleSafe538 Tabor’s Koby Temple snags a throw to first base, attempting to get out Oklahoma Baptist outfielder Mitch Warne during Thursday’s NAIA opening round semifinal game. The runner was ruled safe. The Tabor College baseball team knocked off the No. 1 seeded team in the NAIA opening round tournament, but fell just short of moving on to the Avista-NAIA College World Series with a 7-3 loss to No. 3 Rogers State University Satur­day night.

The Bluejays opened the tournament Thursday with a 7-3 win over Dakota State University, but lost to No. 1 seed Oklahoma Baptist, 10-6, in the semifinals to drop onto the loser’s bracket.

Tabor rallied to defeat Judson College 8-5 Friday and Oklahoma Baptist 8-7 Saturday afternoon to earn a shot at a ticket to the NAIA series.

But it was not to be.

Tabor ended its season with a 44-15 record.

Brown earns first in singles, doubles

The Tabor men’s tennis team competed at the men’s KCAC team tournament at the Riverside Tennis Center in Wichita Thursday. The men lost to McPherson College in semi-final No. 1.

Both of the Tabor men lost in singles, including No. 1 David Simmet (6-1, 6-1) and No. 2 Nathan Panttaja (6-0, 6-1). The Bulldogs swept Tabor in doubles as well, defeating No. 1 Simmet and Clay Shewey (8-3), No. 2 Kelyn Vix and Tyler Dort (8-5) and No. 3 Jakob Brucks and Jeremy Reiswig (8-2).

The Tabor men and women competed at the KCAC Individual tennis tournament in Salina Saturday.

Reimer to play volleyball at OWU

Hillsboro High School senior Krista Reimer signed a letter of intent Friday to play volleyball at Oklahoma Wesleyan University this fall. Reimer was a second-team all-Central Kansas League middle hitter for the Class 3A champion HHS volleyball team last fall and received honorable mention the previous season. The Trojans were 39-6 in 2011. Seated with her are her parents, Brenda Reimer and Cameron Reimer. Behind them are (left) Tracie Collins, head coach at OWU, and Sandy Arnold, head coach at HHS.

 

Serene signs for basketball at Friends

Hillsboro High School senior Callie Serene signed a letter of intent May 1 to play basketball next year at Friends University. The 5-foot, 7-inch shooting guard averaged 9.2 points per game and made better than 42 percent of her three-point shots for the 23-3 Trojans, who placed third at the Class 3A state tournament. Seated with her are parents Bruce and Diedre Serene.
