Hillsboro swimmers fare well in early-season competitions

“Despite the rain and late start to the meet, we swam really well and had a number of close races,” coach Courtney Fast said. “It was a great atmosphere to compete in and the kids responded really well.”
The meet comes after Hillsboro took top honors against Abilene and Herington at the Herington Triangular June 9.
“We are swimming really well,” Fast said. “In all the longer distance events—100-meter freestyle and 100-meter individual medley—we are winning almost every race.
“The experience on our team is helping us be a strong presence in the league.”

Allen named KCAC AD of the year

He will be recognized at the upcoming KCAC Sport Management Conference at Ottawa University Aug. 7.
The annual award is determined by a peer vote among the members of the KCAC Governing Council. By virtue of receiving this award at the conference level, Allen will also be considered as a candidate for the National Athletic Director of the Year by the NAIA Athletic Directors Association.

Five Hillsboro softball players receive state recognition

Five members of Hillsboro’s Class 3A state champion softball team recently received all-state recognition from the Kansas Softball Coaches Association.The two players from the Trojans’ senior-laden squad selected for the first team are both underclassmen. Sophomore shortstop Danae Bina was picked as an infielder and freshman Allison Weber was one of four pitchers chosen. Bina batted .472 , scored 36 runs and drove in 30. Defensively, she finished with a fielding percentage of .928.
Weber posted a 14-2 record in her first season as a Trojan. She struck out 77 batters and walked only 27 in 104 innings. Her earned-run average was 3.16.
Selected for honorable mention were seniors Sammy Koons and Stephanie Sanders as an infielder...
