Funk receives lifetime award for contributions in senior care

Funk Elfrieda Funk, Hillsboro, received the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award from LeadingAge Kansas as part of its annual Quality First Awards of Excellence Ceremony on April 13 in Wichita.

The award is presented to a LeadingAge Kansas member’s chief executive officer, administrator, employee, trustee or board member. It honors individuals who have made a significant contribution to the field of aging services through such things as innovation, dedication, leadership and the effective use of available resources.

Parkside Homes will host a reception honoring Funk from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, in the Oscar Hett Fellowship Center (also known as the large dining room). The public is invited.

BCC-Marion to offer series of non-credit classes this fall

Butler Community College of Marion is offering new learning opportunities with the introduction of its “Take 1 Just 4 Fun.”

Amy Kjellin, Flint Hills Sites director in Marion, said the classes are basically a longer version of the free class day BCC offers each spring.

“These are non-credit classes,” Kjellin told 35 members of the Marion Chamber of Commerce on Friday, “and the classes will vary according to what the teacher wants to do.”

The majority of fees will range between $20 to $40 as a way of paying the teacher for his or her time, she said.

Eleven classes are available in this first set of classes with a brief description of each.

Centre grad makes WBJ ‘40 Under 40’ watch list

Scott Wituk, a graduate of Centre High School, was recently recognized by the Wichita Business Journal as a “40 Under 40” awardee.

Wituk, director of Wichita State University’s Center for Community Support and Research, was recognized because of his involvement in creating thriving and supportive communities and organizations, according to a WBJ spokesperson.

“I am fortunate to be involved with some amazing projects and people in Wichita and across Kansas,” Wituk said. “We (at the Center for Community Support and Research) get to do some really exciting work.”

Tabor College hires new development director

Larry Boettcher came to Tabor College from Good Samaritan Society in Lyons. Larry Boettcher, Newton, has been named director of development for Tabor College, effective last Wednesday.

“We are very fortunate to have Larry Boettcher join the Tabor advancement team,” said Tabor president Jules Glanzer.

“He has a passion for Christian higher education, experience in development and seeks to further the Tabor mission,” he added. “His strong faith and time spent in ministry, coupled with an understanding of Christian stewardship, is a perfect Tabor fit.”

Ron Braun, vice-president for advancement, said Boettcher will bring significant fundraising experience to Tabor.

Hillsboro council OKs transactions on three lots

The Hillsboro City Council approved the sale of two lots in Hillsboro Heights and an option to purchase one lot in Hillsboro Business Park during its July 24 meeting.

The council approved the sale of lots 4 and 5 of Block 3 in Hillsboro Heights—the southwest corner of the intersection of Western Heights Circle and Elm Street—to Melvin Reimer of Hillsboro for $13,500.

Reimer plans to use the lots to build an auto-detail shop and sales showroom, and a second building for a compatible business, according to Clint Seibel, the city’s economic development director.
