Eagle rep talks about broadband possibilities for Hillsboro

About 30 people attended the meeting at Hillsboro City Hall to hear the latest updates in technology related to Internet service, telephone and cable television through the Hays-based company.
The discussion about broadband concerns initially started with Clint Seibel, executive director of the Hillsboro Development Corp. and Joel Klaassen publisher of the Hillsboro Free Press.

High-definition eye scanner helps doctors, patients identify issues

The state-of-the-art machine uses lasers to create a three-dimensional image of the back of the optic nerve and a cross section of the retina.
The high-definition image enables Unruh to examine the condition of the optic nerve as well as each of the 10 layers of the retina separately.
“The two biggest eye diseases that most people think of are glaucoma and macular degeneration,” Unruh said. “This actually has scans for each of those things, so it kind of combines the two.”

Funk receives lifetime award for contributions in senior care

The award is presented to a LeadingAge Kansas member’s chief executive officer, administrator, employee, trustee or board member. It honors individuals who have made a significant contribution to the field of aging services through such things as innovation, dedication, leadership and the effective use of available resources.
Parkside Homes will host a reception honoring Funk from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, in the Oscar Hett Fellowship Center (also known as the large dining room). The public is invited.

BCC-Marion to offer series of non-credit classes this fall

Butler Community College of Marion is offering new learning opportunities with the introduction of its “Take 1 Just 4 Fun.”Amy Kjellin, Flint Hills Sites director in Marion, said the classes are basically a longer version of the free class day BCC offers each spring.
“These are non-credit classes,” Kjellin told 35 members of the Marion Chamber of Commerce on Friday, “and the classes will vary according to what the teacher wants to do.”
The majority of fees will range between $20 to $40 as a way of paying the teacher for his or her time, she said.
Eleven classes are available in this first set of classes with a brief description of each.

Centre grad makes WBJ ‘40 Under 40’ watch list

Scott Wituk, a graduate of Centre High School, was recently recognized by the Wichita Business Journal as a “40 Under 40” awardee.Wituk, director of Wichita State University’s Center for Community Support and Research, was recognized because of his involvement in creating thriving and supportive communities and organizations, according to a WBJ spokesperson.
“I am fortunate to be involved with some amazing projects and people in Wichita and across Kansas,” Wituk said. “We (at the Center for Community Support and Research) get to do some really exciting work.”
