Canton-Galva boys will capitalize on experience

Leading the Canton-Galva boys’ basketball team this winter is this group of seniors and returning letter-winners: front row (from left) Taylor Myers, Nathan Bray; back row, Tad Wedel, Kyle Colburn, Kaleb Daily. Opting to stay in the Heart of America League, the Canton-Galva Eagles have experience returning on the boys’ team this season following a 6-18 overall record and 2-12 in the HOA in 2009-10.

Nick Vogts returns as the Eagles’ leading scorer. The junior guard averaged 7.5 points and 2.5 assists.

The Eagles also return their third-leading scorer, senior guard Taylor Myers, who averaging 6.9 points in eight games.

The senior will be joined by classmates Nathan Bray and Tad Wedel. Bray contributed 1.2 points per game while Wedel saw significant minutes last season and averaged 3.8 points and 2.8 rebounds.

Juniors Kolby Moddelmog and Tyler Miller also are expected to see significant time this season.

CGHS girls will walk a thin line this season

This group of Eagles will form the nucleus of the Canton-Galva team this winter for coach Barry Fritz: front row (from left) Leah Schmitz, Kimmy Voth, Scarlet Gagnebin; (back row) Darci Enns, Addis Marston, Cayla Sommers, Mackenzie Farnham.<p> Canton-Galva girls’ coach Barry Fritz knows the ball is going to have bounce just right if his team is going to have a successful season this winter.

For Fritz, 49-80 in seven years at CGHS and 274-145 for his career, that means staying away from injuries, foul trouble, sickness, turnovers and giving up offensive rebounds.

That’s a tall order.

Key to this year’s team are returning starters Kimmy Voth, a 5-foot, 4-inch guard, and Cayla Sommers, a 5-10 post. Voth averaged five points and two rebounds per game while Som­mers contributed four points and five rebounds per outing.

Fritz sees guard play as the team’s strength. Three juniors are most likely to join Voth in the battle for playing time at that position: Scarlet...

Goessel girls will feature new starting lineup

Creating the nucleus of this year’s Goessel girls’ team are these seniors and returning letter-winners: (from left) Holly Spoonemore, Shianne DeFreese, Shanna Klassen, Jennifer Van Horn, Johanna Hoffman.<p> The Goessel girls faced a big enough challenge this season with the departure of four starters from a team that finished 11-9 overall and 6-5 in the Heart of America League.

But when returning all-state senior Kendra Flaming went down for the season with a knee injury, the challenge for coach Ryan Hoopes and his 2010-11 squad became even more formidable.

“Others will need to step up quickly,” said Hoopes, in his fourth season with the Bluebirds. “It will be interesting to see who fills those spots.”

Heading his list of candidates are three returning letter-winners: senior Shanna Klassen, a 5-foot, 7-inch post player; senior Jennifer Van Horn, a 5-10 guard and post; and sophomore Johanna Hoffman, a 5-6 guard.

GHS boys primed to challenge for WSL title

Goessel coach Justin Coup returns these seniors and letter-winners for the upcoming campaign: front row (from left), Mac Kershner, John Berkholz, Trey Schmidt, Jake Smucker; back row, Braden Unruh, Corey Buller, Neal Brubaker. With three starters and four letter-winners returning from last season’s 11-11 squad, look for the Goessel Bluebird boys to soar above sea level this winter.

Even with three starters back, coach Justin Coup said this year’s rendition will have a very different look.

“This group will be completely different than any team we have had,” said Coup, who is in his 13th season at the helm. “We will be very deep at the guard/forward position. Our quickness and ability to handle the ball is a definite asset as we head into the season.”

But Coup is concerned about his team’s inside play.

Marion wrestling team returns 3 state qualifiers

Marion’s wrestling team has three seniors at its core: (from left) Randy Regnier, Andy Shipman, Galen Funk. Regnier, Shipman and sophomore Brody Carroll qualified for state last season. Last season, the Marion Warriors wrestling team sent seven people to state, four of them placed.

Among those who made the trek to Hays were five underclassmen who return to the Warriors squad this season.

The lone placer is Colten Johnson. He finished 2009-10 fifth as a sophomore in the Class 3-2-1A 160-pound weight division with a 4-2 record.

Senior Randy Regnier (119 pounds), sophomore Brody Carroll (130) and senior Andy Shipman (135) return this season as state qualifiers last year. Regnier finished 1-2 at Hays and. Carroll and Shipman went 0-2.

Regnier finished the season 24-7, Carroll finished 31-12 and Shipman ended with a 19-12 record.
