PBHS debuts 8-man team in new league

Peabody-Burns football will enter its first season in 8-man football with a senior-laden team. Coming off two-straight 0-8 seasons playing 11-man football, Peabody-Burns High School will be adjusting to 8-man football in 2010.

Moving from the Heart of America League to the Wheat State League, the Warriors now play 8-man Division 1, which is a new game for coach David Pickens, but not the players.

Peabody-Burns joined Goessel and Little River and members of the defunct Dwight D. Eisenhower League—Centre, Hope, Solomon, Wakefield, White City and Elyria Christian—to form the Wheat State League.

“Luckily, most of our players have played 8-man in junior high,” Pickens said. “So they are familiar with the game even though they haven’t played it for the last couple years.”

Entering the 2010 season in a new league, the Peabody-Burns volleyball team will look to improve from last season.

Coming off a 10-21 record overall and 2-9 in the Heart of America League, the Warriors enter the new Wheat State League, joining former HOA opponents Goessel and Little River and six schools from the now defunct Dwight D. Eisen­hower League: Centre, Hope, Solomon, Wakefield, White City and Elyria Christian.

Showing flashes of solid play last fall, Peabody-Burns took third at the Solomon tournament and first at its home tournament.

In his ninth year as the Warrior coach, Darren Schroeder returns two starters. Schroeder said senior middle hitter Emery Hodges and outside hitter Michaela Methvin will be looked to for...

PBHS low on runners, but has some talent

The Peabody-Burns cross-country team will be led by (from left) junior Matt Hiebert and seniors Heather Brookes, Lauren Pickens and Sheldon Wiebe. Peabody-Burns High School cross-country coach Kim Topham may not have enough athletes to compete in team competition, but she is returning some runners with talent.

With only four boys out for the team so far this season, the Warriors will need to find at least one more runner if they hope to be eligible to repeat the school’s third-place finish at the Class 2A state race in 2009.

The girls have three runners, two short of the five required for team competition.

Senior Lauren Pickens returns from a sixth-place individual finish at the 2A state race. Pickens has accumulated nine 2A state track gold medals at 100, 200 and 400 meters, but finishing so high over a 4-kilometer course surprised most onlookers.

Centre football returns 9 letter-winners for 2010

Returning to Centre football are seniors Casey Kristek, Cole Svodoba, Tanner Brunner, Brian Burhoop, Benjamin Wirtz and Rustyn Kerbs. Centre High School football was a touchdown and extra-point away from a Sept. 18 victory over Hope in what turned out to be the determining title game in the final year of the Dwight D. Eisenhower League title in 2009.

In the newly formed Wheat State League, the Cougars will butt heads with two other 8-man Division 1 and 2 state playoff teams from a year ago, Goessel and Hope.

Also in the league are former Heart of America schools Goessel, Peabody-Burns and Little River, and six members of the defunct Eisenhower League: Hope, Solomon, Wakefield, White City and Elyria Christian.

The Cougars return seven seniors and nine letter-winners from last season’s 8-2 squad. Heading the list is Tanner Brunner, who returns at quarterback. He...
