PBHS debuts 8-man team in new league

Moving from the Heart of America League to the Wheat State League, the Warriors now play 8-man Division 1, which is a new game for coach David Pickens, but not the players.
Peabody-Burns joined Goessel and Little River and members of the defunct Dwight D. Eisenhower League—Centre, Hope, Solomon, Wakefield, White City and Elyria Christian—to form the Wheat State League.
“Luckily, most of our players have played 8-man in junior high,” Pickens said. “So they are familiar with the game even though they haven’t played it for the last couple years.”

Coming off a 10-21 record overall and 2-9 in the Heart of America League, the Warriors enter the new Wheat State League, joining former HOA opponents Goessel and Little River and six schools from the now defunct Dwight D. Eisenhower League: Centre, Hope, Solomon, Wakefield, White City and Elyria Christian.
Showing flashes of solid play last fall, Peabody-Burns took third at the Solomon tournament and first at its home tournament.

PBHS low on runners, but has some talent

With only four boys out for the team so far this season, the Warriors will need to find at least one more runner if they hope to be eligible to repeat the school’s third-place finish at the Class 2A state race in 2009.
The girls have three runners, two short of the five required for team competition.
Senior Lauren Pickens returns from a sixth-place individual finish at the 2A state race. Pickens has accumulated nine 2A state track gold medals at 100, 200 and 400 meters, but finishing so high over a 4-kilometer course surprised most onlookers.

Centre football returns 9 letter-winners for 2010

In the newly formed Wheat State League, the Cougars will butt heads with two other 8-man Division 1 and 2 state playoff teams from a year ago, Goessel and Hope.
Also in the league are former Heart of America schools Goessel, Peabody-Burns and Little River, and six members of the defunct Eisenhower League: Hope, Solomon, Wakefield, White City and Elyria Christian.
