HHSbbbAtKingmanOllenburger Evan Ollenburger goes airborne for a field-goal attempt against a Kingman defender in Friday’s 69-52 Trojan victory. Ollenburger was fouled on the play and was awarded two free throws. The Hillsboro boys put the pedal to the metal on both ends of the court Friday to secure a 69-52 victory at Kingman in a fast-tempo game that was more lopsided than the score might indicate.

“That’s the sloppiest we’ve been all year on the offensive end,” coach Darrel Knoll said afterward. “There was fast break after fast break that we didn’t finish. Those are plays we normally make. I think, more than anything, that kept this game where it was.

“Other than that, I was extremely pleased with our effort. We played hard.”

Hillsboro made only one of its first six shots to start the game, but didn’t allow a Kingman basket until the 5:15 mark of the first period. With seven players contributing points, Hillsboro...

HHSwrRegionalTyrell Hillsboro’s Tyrell Thiessen looks for the signal from the official that he has pinned Quade McCoy of Eureka in the 285-pound consolation semifinal Saturday. Thiessen then defeated Mika Kaylor 7-0 to place third in his class and earn a berth in the state tournament Thursday and Friday. Two Hillsboro wrestlers earned berths in the Class 3-2-1A state tournament this weekend by securing a top-four performance in their respective weight classes at the Eureka regional Friday and Saturday.

Tanner Jones, wrestling at 160 pounds, and Tyrell Thiessen, competing at 285, each overcame a defeat to place third in their respective weight class.

“Obviously, I am very happy getting Tanner and Tyrell qualified for state, but more importantly, I was proud of their performances in getting there,” coach Scott O’Hare said of the two juniors.

Jones, entering as the No. 3 seed in his weight class, pinned Josh Forbes of Erie in his first match, then lost 6-2 to Kaden Housel of Cherryvale in the second round.

MHSwrRegionalsColten Marion’s Colten Johnson of Marion performs a “gramby” move on Hunter Stalford of Caney Valley in the final seconds of their championship match. The five-point move—two points for a reversal and three for the back points—enabled Johnson to win the match with a 7-5 decision. Six Marion wrestlers earned the right to compete at the state level this weekend by finishing among the top four in their respective weight classes at the Eureka regional Friday and Saturday.

As a team, the Warriors placed third with 129 points, behind Douglass with 165 and Caney Valley with 144.5 points.

“We wrestled great,” said coach Chad Adkins. “I am very proud of all of our kids. They have worked really hard and it has been a pleasure to work with all of them.”

Brody Carroll claimed the regional title in the 138-pound weight class, going 4-0 and winning by fall each time.

“Brody is very focused and wrestled a flawless regional tournament,” Adkins said. “He was the wrestler of the tournament, in my mind. He...

HHSgbbAtKingmanSanders Stephanie Sanders passes the ball along the baseline against Kingman defender Dani Molitor. The Hillsboro girls outscored Kingman by enough over three quarters Friday to coast to the finish line with a 45-26 road win.

The victory clinched at least a tie for the Central Kansas League title at 7-1 and raised Hillsboro’s season mark to 17-2. The Eagles dropped to 1-7 and 7-12.

In spite of committing five turnovers and shooting 3-for-8 from the floor, Hillsboro built a 12-5 lead by the end of the first period, mostly on the strength of 6-for-9 free-throw shooting and defensive pressure that forced eight Kingman turnovers and limited the Eagles to 2-for-7 shooting.

With Callie Serene tossing in six points, the Trojans began to find their offensive rhythm in the second period, expanding the lead to 26-9 by halftime.

TCmbbStMaryMFrise Tabor’s Max Frise puts up a jump shot in the first half of the Bluejays’ 77-68 loss to Saint Mary Saturday. He went on to become the high scorer of the game with 23 points. The Tabor men’s win streak ended this week with back-to-back home losses to the No. 2 and No. 3 teams in the KCAC, Sterling College on Thursday and the University of Saint Mary on Saturday.

The losses leave the Bluejays with a fourth-place finish in the conference at 10-8 and a 14-15 record overall.

“They keep fighting,” said assistant coach Anthony Munson. “It doesn’t matter who it is, they keep battling and grinding it out, and we love them for that. We’re so blessed to have a good group of seniors. The hard part is going to be replacing all of them.”

Saint Mary—The Tabor men couldn’t keep up with the Spires’ high-powered offense as they fell to the KCAC’s second-place team, 77-68.
