Tabor CC teams 5th, 7th in opener

The Tabor College cross-country teams visited Baker University on Saturday for the first meet of the season.

The Tabor women placed fifth in a field of 10. The men placed seventh out of nine teams.

Running a 3.2 kilometer race instead of the 5 kilometer standard used in mid-season runs, Liz Kleinsasser led the women’s team with a 12-minute, 22-second run good for sixth place among 86 finishers.

“She had an outstanding start to her college career,” coach Karol Hunt said.

Heidi Schmidt (12:59, 22nd) ran second for the Bluejays and Leah Kopper (13:44, 40th) ran third.

“Leah had a good summer of running and came into the design with a renewed desire to run,” Hunt said. “She competed really well today.“

The first reality-based comedy TV show in history can be traced back to 1948, which I’m happy to say is before my time. In fact, it was a radio program in 1947 before making the transition to television.

The TV show featured unsuspecting people who were placed in confusing, impossible, embarrassing, ridiculous and hilarious positions, while their reactions were recorded on a hidden camera. The now famous, oft-repeated tagline was, “Smile, you’re on ‘Candid Camera.’”

If you watch many sporting events on television, you are well aware of how often the camera is pointing at something or someone other than the athletes playing the game.

It has been one year since I signed on to write for the Free Press.Unlike my friend Dan, who quit training the killer whales after a year,I really like what I do for a living. It really isn’t much of acomparison. Writing involves no scrubbing or heavy lifting, and I’mquite confident that I will not be swallowed whole by a two-ton mammalin the middle of my work day.

Plus, I can actually accomplish a lot while watching TV.

I hadn’t seen an episode of “Columbo” in probably 15 years. But everything is more fun when Columbo is involved in some way. Even when you’re sweating while watching because your fan can’t keep up with the heat.
