Southern Nazarene came to Hillsboro Friday and swept Tabor, 30-19, 30-25, 30-15. The Bluejays beat Friends, 23-30, 30-22, 27-30, 30-21, 15-13, in a see-saw match Sept. 11. An open letter to USD 410 regarding the mental health risks of recess games

To whom it may concern:

Whether you want it publicly known or not, my entire K-12 education occurred in Hillsboro and USD 410. I had my ups and downs, but I really didn’t have any complaints . . . until now.

It has only recently been brought to my attention that I was subjected to unusually harsh and unusual punishment during those critical, formative years.

I’m talking about the damage that was done to my psyche because of having played games like tag during recess. And make no mistake, throughout the course of my educational experience, the school district not only allowed, but encouraged the playing of those games.

Here I thought we were merely playing games and having fun, but apparently we were having our self-esteem...

MHS dropped 17-7 by Sterling

Carlson did not get this one, but did make Marion’s biggest play. He came in at quarterback when Mitchell Leppke went out with an injury late in the fourth quarter and threw a 19-yard completion to Justin Heidebrecht.


Sterling defeated the Marion High football team 17-7 in a defensive battle at Marion on Friday night.

When Sterling went three-and-out for its first possession and Marion took a a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter, the Warriors appeared to be heading for a 3-0 start to the season.

HHS Boys ninth at Wichita

Battling a field of large-school athletes, the Hillsboro boys’ cross-country team finished ninth among 13 squads at the Wichita Southeast Invita­tional on Saturday.

The Trojans finished with 202 points, well behind the battle for the meet title between the home team, with 85 points, and Kapaun Mount Carmel with 86.

“Against 11 5A and 6A schools, we competed well with a number of runners setting new personal records,” coach Stuart Holmes said.

Senior Cody McMillen continued to be the Trojan pace setter, placing eighth overall in a time of 16 minutes, 57 seconds. Following in 16th place was Nicholas Mueller, who covered the 5-kilometer course at the Cessna Activity Center in 17:37.

Marion Harriers place 3rd at Peabody

The Marion High School cross country team ran at Peabody last Thursday. Three girls medaled and three others set personal best times in the varsity race.

Camille Christensen turned in the top time for the Warriors, finishing 10th in 17 minutes, 31 seconds. Amanda Richmond finished 12th in 17:34 and Jaclyn DeForest was 20th in 18:01.

Brooke Johnson (22nd, 18:03), Tacy Taylor (15th, 18:15), Bridgett Lundy (34th, 19:10) and Lucy Collett (43rd, 20:50) rounded out the top seven.

Johnson, Lundy and Collett all set personal bests, as did JV runners Danae Edwards and Shayla Rahe.

As a team, Marion placed third in a field of six behind Bennington and Remington.
