TC men earn playoff berth

Needing one victory in their final two regular-season games to seal a playoff spot, the Tabor College men’s soccer team lost its final games of the season to Sterling (1-0) and Kansas Wesleyan (3-0). But Tabor qualified for post-season play when Southwestern, Ottawa and Saint Mary each lost its final regular-season finale. On Saturday, a goal by Warriors forward Ryan Covey proved the difference in a 1-0 contest. On Wednesday, the Coyotes downed the Bluejays 3-0 behind a goal and an assist from Jose Garay. The men finished 3-6 in regular season games and play at Bethel at 7:30 p.m.



For the women, a 9-0 loss to Kansas Wesleyan and a 5-2 loss to Sterling ended their season. Leading scorer Jessica...

Swedes, Coyotes beat Bluejays twice

TCvbBlockPA184104.jpg The Tabor College volleyball team lost Thursday to Bethany (12-30, 25-30, 16-30).

The Swedes grabbed the lead for good at 4-3 in the first game and limited the Bluejays to just 9 points the rest of the way.

Tabor put together a stronger showing in the second game, taking a 3-2 lead and building that advantage to 17-11. But Bethany came roaring back behind the serving of Lisa Runnebaum, who began her rotation trailing 19-12 and ended up giving the Swedes a 23-20 lead.

Ashley Cohlmia killed that run, and the Bluejays stayed close. Tabor pulled within 28-25 on a sharp spike by Taylor Lawrence. But Bethany senior setter Kelli Noonan closed out the game on her serve.

Bluejays slip to 1-5 with 30-14 loss to Spires

When it rains, it pours—and in a cold, blustery torrent at Saint Mary’s home away from home in Platt City, Mo., the Tabor College football team committed four crippling turnovers Saturday and lost to the Spires, 30-14.

With the loss, Tabor slid to 0-5 in conference play for the first time since 1999, and lost to the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference’s perennial whipping boy for the first time in five years.

But the Spires, aided by the rain and two critical fumbles, stepped out of their traditional role and stopped Tabor twice inside its 5-yard line in the first half.

Coaches like limelight more than criticism

Nobody said coaching is easy. Well, maybe some disagree with that opinion, but there’s more to coaching than coaching. Got that?

Coaching isn’t simply teaching players how to play together as a well-oiled machine. At the collegiate level, coaching involves wining and dining recruits, parents, alumni and pleasing a fan base that is more fickle than the Kansas weather.

Coaching involves fundraising so the program can grow bigger and better.

A successful coach probably has earned the equivalent of degrees in psychology and communications. A coach needs to understand the minds of 18-to-22-year-olds while also knowing how to communicate effectively with sports reporters.

Kleinsasser runs 8th at NAIA Mid-States race

Tabor College freshman Liz Kleinsasser placed eighth among 210 finishers Saturday at the NAIA Mid-States Classic at Southwestern.

Kleinsasser turned in a personal-record-tying 5-kilometer time of 19 minutes, 16 seconds and led the Bluejays to 14th place among 31 competing teams.

“Liz ran an outstanding race and, on this day, was the first conference runner to cross the finish line,” coach Karol Hunt said. “Her performance was especially satisfying because eighth is the highest finish we have had at this meet.”
