Marion girls go winless in three-game set

The Marion High School girls were swept by Garden Plain, Inman and St. John at the Inman tournament and stand at 1-3 for the season.Garden Plain defeated the Warriors 72-43 Tuesday. Inman beat Marion 57-52 Thursday and St. John won 54-17 on Friday.
St. John—The Tigers, ranked first in Class 2A by the Wichita Eagle, had their way with the Warriors after a slow start.
The Tigers took an 11-2 lead, and with 2:44 left in the opening quarter, put together a back-breaking sequence of missed shots and offensive rebounds that culminated in a 3-pointer for Brooke Burgen.
Julia Zeiner added a 10-foot jumper on Marion’s next possession, but the quarter ended with St. John leading 23-4.

The Marion boys were swept at the Inman early-season tournament and now stand at 1-3 doe the season.A 73-56 loss to the St. John Tigers Friday came on the heels of a 59-50 loss to the host Teutons and capped a long week that began with a 99-77 loss to Garden Plain.
St. John—The Tigers, ranked second in Class 2A by the Wichita Eagle, was a juggernaut Friday, shooting nearly 53 percent from the field and out-rebounding the Warriors at both ends of the floor.
Marion took a 2-0 lead on the first shot of the game, as Chase Carlson drove along the baseline and threw in a tough-angle floater in the early seconds.

Warriors sweep double-dual at Burlington

The Marion High School wrestlers defeated Chase County and Burlington in double dual action in Burlington. The Warriors topped the Bulldogs 38-37 and the Wildcats 45-27.Three Warriors won matches on the mat against Chase County: Tylor Neil defeated Ben Green 10-2 at 140, Charlie Holub defeated Garrett Benjamin 11-0 at 145, and Derek Riggs pinned Trenton Harshman at 215.
Marion was dominate against the hosts, giving away points at 103, 189 and 285 but defeating Burlington at nearly every other classification.

HHS girls lose opener to Smoky Valley

The Hillsboro girls enjoyed a fruitful first half in their season opener against a quality Smoky Valley squad on Monday (Dec. 3). But in the end the Trojans got “Pihl-ed” by the Vikings in Lindsborg, 47-40.Smoky Valley’s senior standout guard, Rhys Pihl, poured in 26 points, including 15 in the second half, to lead her team to victory in the first round of pool play in the Cheney Cardinal Classic.
The Trojans held the upper hand for most of the first half, and extended their lead to 20-14 when Amy Neufeld followed a 3-point basket with a 17-footer within the arc at the 2:22 mark of the second period.
But the Vikings hit eight straight free-throws in the final 1:51 to take a 22-21 lead into the locker room.

Hillsboro used a long-range missile attack to sink a Viking ship Monday night, coming from behind to clip Smoky Valley, 47-42, in the season opener for both teams.The Trojans struggled to find some flow on offense during a tentative first half, but depended on defense to keep within range of the Vikings, 20-15, at intermission.
“I think early we were all a little nervous,” coach Darrel Knoll said. “We weren’t moving very well on offense and our timing was off. We just weren’t making any shots or getting any rebounds.”
