Snow, ice precipitate postponements for all six Marion County high schools

Each of the six high schools in the Free Press distribution area lost at least one night of basketball games to Old Man Winter last week. Only three encounters went ahead as planned.

Hillsboro High School had games against Halstead and Nickerson postponed. The Trojans were to play host to Collegiate this Tuesday, as scheduled.

Hillsboro will host a makeup contest with Halstead on Friday and will make up the road contest against Nickerson on Monday, Jan. 7.

Marion’s home games against Lyons were pushed back to Jan. 5. The Warriors games at Smoky Valley were played Friday in Lindsborg.

Peabody-Burns had once-delayed games against Berean Academy bumped a second time. The road games, originally marked for Dec. 8, will be played Jan...

Canton-Galva vs. Peabody-Burns

The Eagles outpaced the Warriors 32-20 Friday night. After scoring a field goal and a foul shot during a 9-8 first quarter, Canton-Galva guard Allie Enns gave the Eagles a big lift in the second.

Enns hit a 2-pointer, then consecutive 3-pointers and another 2-point shot, tallying all 10 points during a 10-2 run that put the Warriors in a 19-10 hole headed into halftime.

Enns did not score in the second half, but still turned in a game-high 13 points.

Kaitlyn Bressie scored a pair of 2-point shots in the period and finished with 7 as Canton-Galva’s second leading scorer.

Kylie Haines scored 6 points, Ashley Vogts notched 5, and Kaycie Shearer chipped in a foul shot to round out the Eagles scoring.

The Hillsboro boys rewarded the fans who followed them to Cheney on a wintry Saturday with a glimpse of this team’s considerable potential in an impressive 76-54 victory over Winfield in the third-place game in the Cardinal Classic.

Coming off a humbling home-court loss against Cheney earlier in the week, the Trojans shot, defended and rebounded their way to a dominant win, including an explosive 29-point fourth quarter.

Trojan girls snare first win

After coming up short against two quality opponents to start the season, the Hillsboro girls finally were rewarded with their first win—and in convincing fashion.

The Trojans handled Chaparral easily on Saturday, 46-28, in the fifth-place game at the Cardinal Classic.

Hillsboro jumped to a commanding 18-3 lead after one quarter, having its way against the Roadrunners’ man defense. Scoring all 18 points by taking the ball inside, the Trojan surge was led by post players Dakota Kaufman with six points...

HHS wrestlers pin 2nd at Hesston

Hillsboro wrestlers finished second and Marion third at the 17-school Hesston Invitational Tournament on Saturday.

The Trojans finished with 155.5 points to trail Smoky Valley at 163. Marion tallied 130.5 points.

The Trojans won titles in three weight classes: Nicholas Mueller at 135 pounds, Tyler Jones at 145 and Jacob Yoder at 189.

Alex Jost placed second at 112 pounds and Frankie Martin did the same at 171.
