Marion, area golfers take top spots

The four teams from Marion County dominated the 11-team Marion Invitational April 29, finishing 1-2-3-4, with fourth-place Centre 33 strokes better than fifth-place Sacred Heart.

Centre (361) just missed out on third place, finish five behind Peabody-Burns (356). Goessel (346) took second. Marion (336) defended its home turf behind a 77 from individual champion Luke Gordon.

Thomas McGee (79) claimed second for Peabody-Burns. Goessel’s Nate Ensz (80) and Marion’s Keith Jones (81) rounded out the top four.

Of sixty participants, only two golfers from outside the county placed in the top ten. Chris McKinney (84) placed fifth for Sacred Heart and Phillip Sanders (87) placed ninth for Remington.

Gottsch adds eight signees in April

Coach Mike Gottsch inked six players besides American Samoa-born cousins Buddy Tuamasaga (6-4, 325 pounds) and Rodney Finau (6-2, 325 pounds) in April. But adding 650 pounds of muscle to the defensive line is some big news for the Bluejays.

The fact that both are strong and athletic players makes it even better, according to Gottsch.

“I’ve seen some big guys that aren’t very good,” he said. “But I think these guys are big and good.”

Gottsch also said the two players were so impressed with Tabor’s educational opportunities and the football program during their recent visit to Hillsboro that they signed with Bluejays before returning home to L.A.

The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference outdoor track and field championship meet record in the women’s 4x800 relay wasn’t broken at Friends University Friday.

It was demolished.

The dynamite foursome of Liz Kleinsasser, Amber Wiens, Shelby Miller and Heidi Schmidt blew the old record away, stopping the clock at 9:26.79—26 full seconds earlier than the previous meet record of 9:53.

They also shattered their own school record, set at 9:43.03 in perfect conditions on their home track...

KCAC fetes two for baseball

Tabor College standouts Chris Brown and Alfred Wilson have been named first team all-KCAC baseball selections by the conference’s coaches.

Brown, a senior catcher from Grass Valley, Calif., was among the conference leaders in hits, home runs and RBI the entire season.

Wilson, a senior outfielder from New Orleans, La., was among conference leaders in hits and runs, setting the school record for doubles in a season (17), which ranked third overall in the conference.

“I am proud of the accomplishments of these two men, they both played a major role for this team and their production will be missed,” coach Chad Newhard said.

Tabor tennis has two feted

The Tabor College tennis teams each had one athlete named to an all-conference team. Senior Laurel Delamater was a unanimous first-team selection on the women’s side and junior Aaron Friesen was a second-team selection.

Delamater and Friesen also won the tennis Scholar-Athlete awards.

The Tabor women’s team placed third overall with a record of 3-3. The Tabor men’s team placed fourth, also with a record of 3-3.
