Trojan tennis lands 13th at Tournament of Champions

Competing in perhaps its most challenging tournament of the regular season, the Hillsboro tennis team settled for 13th place among 16 schools at Wichita Collegiate’s Tourna­ment of Champions on Saturday.

To score team points, competitors had to win their opening match. The only Trojan to get through that round was Amber Loewen, who defeated Snell from Ellinwood (8-0) in the singles draw to account for Hills­boro’s 5 points.

“That was a really nice win for her since it was a league school,” coach Lynn Wiebe said. “I was also pleased that Amber did not give up any games in that match. She played steady.”

HHS volleyball improves to 12-2

The Hillsboro volleyball team started slowly put picked up steam en route to a sweep of its two matches at a triangular in Lindsborg last Tuesday.

The Trojans knocked off Halstead 25-17, 25-18, in the opening match, then came back to beat the home team, Smoky Valley, 25-14, 25-22. Neither match counted toward league standings.

The Trojans (0-2 league, 6-13 overall) struggled in the early going against Halstead (0-2, 6-13).

“I didn’t think we played our best, but not playing your best and still beating them in two is a good thing,” coach Sandy Arnold said.

Arnold felt her team played a lot better against a competitive Smoky Valley squad (2-0, 7-7).

Pine Edge set to host golf scramble Sunday

Pine Edge Golf Course is holding the Goessel Bluebird Golf Scramble this Sunday.

A $40 entry fee includes green fees, prizes and lunch for each two-person team. A maximum of three mulligans can be purchased for $5 or three for $10. Members of the Goessel football team will be available as caddies for a $5 donation to the football program.

All proceeds go toward new equipment for the Goessel High School football program.

Pat Bartel wins senior women's title

Pat Bartel, Hillsboro, won the 2007 Women’s Senior Golf Tournament Thursday at Hills­boro Municipal Golf Course.

Bartel, playing in the 50-59 age division, shot an 83 over 18 holes. The next-best score in the tournament was an 88 by Nancy Alt, Abilene, who won the 60-64 division.

Elaine Sears, Abilene, won the 65-69 division (91) , Shirley Meysen­burg, Abilene, won the 70-74 (92) and Jean Lind, Hutch­inson, won the 75-plus (95).

In the side contests, Bartel won closest to the pin at 48 feet, 10 inches; Elouise Edwards, McPherson, sank the longest putt at 170 inches; Lois Smith, Marion, hit the straightest drive.

Utting is local men's senior champ

Stan Utting, Hillsboro, won the 33rd annual Men’s Senior Golf Tournament Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 12-13, at the Hillsboro Municipal Golf Course.

Utting shot a 72 over 18 holes to win the 55-59 age division and the tournament.

Five golfers shot a 77 for the next-best score.

Two of those golfers competed in the 50-54 division. Bob Wagner, Wichita, won in a scorecard playoff with Herman Hoffman, Lyons. Ken Johnson, Hillsboro, was third with a 78.

In the 55-50 division Dan Sabolloz, Wichita, shot a 77 for second place. Ed Thiessen, Hesston, was third with an 81.

Jay Kimberly, Hillsboro, won the 60-64 division in a scorecard playoff with Richard Knaak, Tulsa. Both shot a 77. Harvey Ray, Hillsboro, placed third at 86.
