HHS takes 2 of 3 duals at Smokey

Hillsboro High School wrestlers opened the new season Thursday at Lindsborg by winning two of three dual matches against some of the top squads in the Mid Central Activities Association.

The Trojans began the evening with a 35-30 loss to Hoisington, the only squad to defeat them a year ago in duals.

Five Trojans registered victories on the mat: Dylan Delk defeated Drew Reisner 9-7 at 119 pounds; Darren Mueller pinned Jerrod Umphrey at 130 pounds; Nicholas Mueller defeated Dalton Bell 11-6 at 135; Tyler Jones pinned...

Marion boys and girls claim victories over Chase Co.

The Marion High School boys clobbered Chase County 71-42 Friday.

Justin Heidebrecht started fast. Calvin Jeffrey missed the mark with his first shot, and Bulldog forward Tyler Duncan grabbed the rebound.

But Heidebrecht pilfered the ball from Duncan in the Chase County backcourt and gave the Warrriors the lead they would not lose all of 13 seconds into the contest.

Luke Gordon finished off a pass from Jeffrey on the next trip down, and Heidebrecht struck again, setting up his own score with a steal and a layup at 5:59 in the first.

The Bulldogs bounced back with a 3-point shot from Brian Palermo, halving the lead 11 seconds later.

Area girls' teams find the going tough in season openers

Goessel 

The Bluebirds lost their season opener 47-26 Friday at Remington. A12-4 Bronco run in the first quarter had Goessel playing from behindall night.

Jennifer Raymond, Aspen Frey and Karina Harvey eachscored in the second quarter, and the Bluebirds matched the Remingtontotal in the frame making 18-10 the halftime score.


Goessel managed five points in the third against a 21-point outburst in the third quarter.

The Bluebirds, led by seven from Raymond, outscored Remington 11-8 in the fourth quarter.

Raymond led the Bluebirds with 11 points.

Goessel hosted Elyria Christian on Tuesday, and next on the Goessel schedule are Veritas Christian Friday in Goessel, and Burrton on Saturday at home.Canton-Galva

Goessel

The Bluebirds torched Remington 69-47 Friday with four Goessel starters finishing in double figures.

Austin Unruh scored 7 points in a 14-10 first quarter and finished with 15.


Unruh and Nathan Ensz each scored 5 points in the second quarter—a 14-6 frame for the Bluebirds. Ensz finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds and 5 blocked shots.

Remington, to its credit, did not roll over, but Goessel continued to score at a high rate in the third quarter. Craig Banman and Seth Ott each scored 6 points in the third, sparking a 21-14 run. Cameron Voth posted nine points—all 3-pointers—in the fourth quarter.

Banman finished with 10 and Ott finished with 17.

Remington’s Jake Thiessen scored 20 points to lead all players.

Kids tourney draws 215 Wrestlers

Seventeen members of the Hillsboro Kids Wrestling Club competed in the annual Hillsboro Takedown Tournament in Brown Gymnasium on Saturday.

Two of the wrestlers, Ryan Stepanek and Braden Vogt, won their three-member pool with 2-0 marks. Competing during the day were 215 wrestlers from 21 clubs in central Kansas.

Following are the Hillsboro results by age divsion.

6 & Under: Jarred Rahe 2-1 (2nd), Jax Tracy 0-3 (4th), Iean Hemel 1-2 (3rd), Wesley Shaw 1-1 (2nd).

8 & Under: Benjamin Koop 1-2 (3rd), Jorge Hanschu 0-3 (4th), Lane Hemel 0-2 (3rd), Ryan Stepanek 2-0 (1st), Braden Vogt 2-0 (1st), Tyson Reimer 1-1 (2nd), Nathan Simhiser 2-1 (2nd).
