The setting, odd as it was, was somehow appropriate for the scenario: two tradition-rich programs, with a history of memorable head-to-head matchups, squaring off in a middle-school gym with the modest goal of salvaging a single victory and a seventh-place finish at the 14th annual Trojan Classic.

In the end, never mind the humbling circumstances. The intensity of the battle stayed true to tradition, with Hillsboro claiming a hard-fought 67-62 victory over Riley County on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons jumped to an early 7-4 lead, before the Trojans rallied to post a 15-12 advantage at the first break on the strength of a late 8-0 run that vaulted HHS into a 15-9 lead.

Riley County came back to take its largest lead, 22-17, at the...

Hillsboro’s second-half rally ran out of gas down the stretch, enabling Hesston to claim third place at the Trojan Classic with a 53-43 victory Saturday at Brown Gymnasium.

The Trojans seemed teetering on the edge of a blowout loss to the Swathers, who rode 18 Hillsboro turnovers to a 25-16 lead by halftime.

After a slow start by both squads in second half, the Trojans suddenly found their stride. Trailing 28-18, the comeback started mildly when Tiffany Rooker made one of two free throws with 3:49 left in...

The Marion boys finished with a 1-2 record and sixth place at the Trojan Classic in Hillsboro last week.

A 61-36 loss to top-seeded Hesston in the first round set up a Thursday afternoon contest against the hosts. Marion outscored the Trojans 16-5 in the fourth quarter to win the game, advancing to face Wamego in the fifth-place game on Saturday. The Red Raiders defeated Marion 71-43.

Wamego—The Red Raiders got off to a quick start in the battle for fifth place, outscoring Marion 5-0 in the first minute and bullying their way to a 13-3 lead out of the gate.

Sparked by two layups and a fast-break jump shot from Eric Vogel, Marion put together a 6-2 run to cut it to two possessions at 15-9.
