Competing in a format that played to its strengths, the Hillsboro wrestling team went undefeated at the Southeast of Saline Dual Tournament on Saturday.

The tournament pitted the six participating schools in head-to-head dual matches in a round-robin format. Hesston depth derails Trojans

In the end, it was Hesston’s depth and physical strength in the paint that enabled the state-ranked Swathers to escape Brown Gymnasium with a 50-41 victory over Hillsboro on Friday.

For the first 20 minutes of the contest, the Trojans went toe to toe with Hesston, who came in ranked third in Class 4A at 10-1. When David Loewen scored in the post with 3:48 left in the third quarter, the Trojans, who trailed 28-26 at halftime, were down by only four points, 37-33.

Tabor slips into tie for fourth

The Tabor College women’s basketball team enters the seventh week of conference games tied for fourth in the KCAC after a split week against Saint Mary and McPherson.

Tabor overcame a slow start to beat the Spires 65-59 on the road Saturday. The Bulldogs stole a 54-50 victory in Hillsboro.

Saint Mary—On a rebound and putback, Dana Champlin scored first for Tabor. But the Spires scored more often in the early going, putting together a long run to take an 18-8 lead.

After a 3-pointer by Kirsten Watson, Tabor closed the gap to 20-15 on a 2-pointer by Stacie Herman set up by another Champlin offensive rebound.

Hillsboro girls fall short against Swathers

Hillsboro used defense to open the door for a rally against Hesston on Friday, but the Trojans couldn’t find the offense to walk through it as the Swathers held on for a 47-38 win at Brown Gymnasium.

The victory kept Hesston, 10-3 overall, tied for the league lead at 5-0. Hillsboro, suffering its fifth straight loss, dropped to 5-9 and 2-3.

The Swathers had used a 9-0 run midway through the second quarter to push a tentative 12-11 lead to a 10-point spread. By halftime the lead was 29-16.

Tabor Splits with Spires, Bulldogs

The Tabor College men’s basketball team split contests with Saint Mary and McPherson this week, falling to the Bulldogs 71-63 at home and bouncing back with a 70-64 road win over the Spires.

Saint Mary—After blowing the Spires off the floor for the first 20 minutes and taking a 44-24 lead on the first shot of the second half, the Bluejays nearly blew it by allowing a 23-6 run early in the second half.

After teetering on the brink of being unceremonially buried before the break, Saint Mary made it 50-45 with 12:02 left in the game.

Zach Vanselow picked up his third foul at 11:18, and Kamrick Lamont made it a one-shot game on Saint Mary’s possession.
