Legion Post 366 11-1 following second sweep of Abilene

Rain washed out a contest scheduled for Thursday against Hesston, but torrential offense against Abilene on Tuesday, June 17, helped Hillsboro Legion Post 366 improve its season record to 11-1.

The first game was ended by the 10-run rule after a 2-run double by Jacob Fish in the bottom of the sixth gave Post 366 an 11-1 lead. Post 366 won the second game 17-9.

Hillsboro struck first when Cole Starkey drove in Calvin Jeffrey for a 1-0 lead. Brian Palermo then lined into a double play that cleared the bases ahead of cleanup hitter Daniel Jost, who crushed a triple to straightaway center...

Pine Edge to host putting tournament

Pine Edge Golf Course will host its third annual $25,000 Putting Tournament on July 5.

Every contestant to make a 10-foot putt on the first attempt will win a prize, as will every contestant to make a 20-foot putt on the first try.

Five will qualify to putt for the grand prize, and would have to make a 10-foot putt, a 30-foot putt and a 50-foot putt.

The tournament is open to males and females older than 18 and not involved with high school sports activities.

There is no entry fee, but mulligans can be purchased for $2 each or six for $10.

Rules make baseball a most unusual sport

With all due respect to former pro baseball player and broadcaster Joe Garagiola, baseball isn’t just a funny game. It’s also an unusual game.

Name another sport where the dimensions vary from stadium to stadium. Football fields, soccer fields, basketball courts all use standard dimensions. Not so baseball.

Some dimensions are consistent, i.e., the distance between bases and the distance from the home plate to the pitching rubber. But ballparks are not created equal.

For instance, there’s Fenway Park, with its short left-field fence and famous Green Monster, and Wrigley Field, with all of its nooks and crannies along an outfield wall covered with ivy. Baseballs have been known to get lost in that ivy.

With Brian Fruechting on the mound, Hillsboro Legion Post 366 won its ninth contest of the season in the first half of a Father’s Day doubleheader at Moundridge by a 10-0 tally.

Hillsboro then suffered its only loss of the season, 8-7, in the second game.

Hillsboro had run its unbeaten streak to eight by sweeping Abilene on the road four days earlier, hammering the hosts 17-0 in the first game and claiming a 4-0 win behind a strong...
