Athletic spending more upsetting than March Madness

In the midst of March Mad­ness, we can debate which team is No. 1 now, but it doesn’t really matter, because when it’s all said and done, one team will win the national championship.

In college athletics, there’s something more maddening than March Madness, but the public doesn’t seem to care.

While college tuition increases grab the headlines, the rise in what top football-playing universities spend on athletes is even steeper.

The amount of athletics spending per athlete at universities in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) grew by about 50 percent between 2005 and 2010, compared to a 38 percent increase in in-state tuition at public four year-universities, according to a report released by Delta Cost Project, a...

Bluejay men’s tennis team falls at Emporia

The Tabor men’s tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision at Emporia State University March 11

“All three doubles matches were closely contested with close games and exceptional play by both teams,” coach John Ruder said.

In No. 1 doubles, Kelyn Vix and Tyler Dort dropped an 8-5 decision to Keenan Smith and Bryson Dabney.

Sam Brucks and Jake Brucks fell 8-3 to Andrew Davids and Matt Edwards in No. 2 doubles, while Nate Panttaja and Darryn Davis lost to Mitch Kibbe and Kenton Hallowell, 8-3, in the No. 3 spot.

Panttaja gained the Bluejays’ sole victory of the day in a battle against Dabney in No. 3 singles.

Bluejays open KCAC with 4-0 sweep of Mac

Jake Landers slides into third base in Tabor’s first KCAC game against McPherson. The Bluejays went on to sweep the home doubleheader Friday and followed that with two victories at McPherson Saturday to boast a 4-0 KCAC record. The Tabor baseball team picked up its first conference wins of the season with four victories against McPherson College Friday and Saturday to improve to 4-0 in the KCAC, 13-5 overall.

On Friday, Tabor won 11-1 and 10-4.

“We played really well the first two games of the series,” coach Mark Standiford said. “We had good at-bats and our pitching was outstanding.”

In Game 1, the Bluejays claimed a 3-1 lead at the end of three innings, then added eight unanswered runs over the next two innings.

Kirk Rocha—KCAC Player of the Week—knocked two home runs for the Bluejays. The junior outfielder had three hits, scored three runs and drove in four in three at-bats.

Bluejay softball team goes 1-4 for week

The Tabor College softball team recorded one win and four losses last week to hold a 2-9 record for the season.

Saint Gregory’s—After dropping a 12-4 loss to the 16th-ranked Cavaliers the previous weekend, the Bluejays faced Saint Gregory’s in a doubleheader Wednesday, dropping both games 5-0, 8-2.

Neither team scored the first four innings of Game 1, but a late burst by the Cavaliers resulted in three runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth for the 5-0 victory.

Tabor recorded four hits in the game, one each from Sarah Massey, Cortnie Killen, Lauren Brown and Brooke Tomten.

Karen Harris pitched six innings for Tabor and allowed nine hits and five runs with no strikeouts.

Eight Trojans earn all-league status

The Hillsboro girls’ and boys’ basketball teams combined for eight athletes receiving all-league recognition from the Cen­tral Kansas League coaches.

The league co-champion girls (8-1, 23-3), who went on to place third in the Class 3A tournament, placed two players on the first team, one on the second team and had one receive honorable mention.

Picked unanimously for the first team were senior Tena Loewen, who averaged 13.4 points and four rebounds per game, and junior Addie Lackey, who led the team in scoring at 14.2 points and assists with 2.8 per contest.

Named to the second team was junior point guard Danae Bina, who averaged 11.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and a team-high 2.9 steals per game.
