Hillsboro council votes to refinance bonds

The Hillsboro City Council took three actions at its Nov. 2 meeting that should enhance the city’s financial situation over the not-too-distant future.

Meeting as the Public Build­ing Commission, members first approved a resolution that would refinance the city’s revenue bonds that were used in 2005 to finance the construction of the family aquatic center.

Because of lower interest rates, refinancing would save the city about $235,000 over the life of the bond and $190,000 in present savings, according to J.T. Klaus, the city’s bond counsel.

The latter amount is nearly equivalent to an entire year’s payment, according to City Administrator Larry Paine.

Acupuncture gives patients another treatment option

With a chart of human pressure points on the wall behind her, Kodi Panzer holds up her two primary tools for acupuncture therapy: an electric unit she uses on the ear and a package of needles. Area residents have another treatment option for a wide variety of health issues, should they choose to stick with it.

More to the point, acupuncture has come to Marion County.

Kodi Panzer, lead practitioner at Panzer Chiropractic Clinic, began offering the service last month at her office at 122 S. Main in Hillsboro.

The centuries-old treatment approach is best known as a procedure that inserts and manipulates needles into various points on the body to relieve pain, or for therapeutic purposes.

“There’s needles, but you can use your fingers, massage, acu-patches, laser and electricity,” Panzer said. “Right now, I’m using needles on the body and then I have an electrical machine that I use for the ear.”

‘Great Pumpkin Race’ set for Oct. 30

First Mennonite Church will sponsor “The Great Pumpkin Race” Satur­day, Oct. 30. The event includes a 5-kilometer run/walk at 9 a.m. and a kids’ half-mile run/walk at 9:30 a.m.

Participants need to pre-register by Oct. 20 to guarantee a long-sleeved T-shirt. The cost is $20 per entrant in the 5-K and $10 in the kids’ run prior to Oct. 20. The cost on race day will be $25 and $15, respectively.

Costumes are encouraged and prizes will be awarded for the best entries.

Participants are encouraged to donate a 12-ounce jar of peanut butter or two canned goods on race day for the Marion County Food Bank.

Classical guitarist to perform in Hillsboro this month

Music lovers will have several opportunities to hear Elizabeth Busch, a classical guitarist and songwriter from California, later this month.

Busch will perform at Java Jays on the Tabor College campus at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21. The public is welcome to attend and enjoy this afternoon performance.

At 7:30 p.m. she will do a show at Little Pleasures in downtown Hillsboro. Donations will be taken at this performance.

Copies of her latest CD recording, “Consecrated: Songs Along the Journey,” will be available for purchase at each of these venues.

A performance also is planned for Parkside Homes at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 in the congregate dining room.
