n The Hillsboro City Council approved having a fireworks display as part of the city-wide celebration of the completion of the Main Street renovation project. Fireworks are otherwise limited by ordinance to the Fourth of July and New Year’s holidays.

n After two years of reconstruction, Kansas Highway 150 from U.S. 56 at Marion to U.S. Highway 50 at Elmdale will reopen Friday just in time for the Labor Day weekend. The cost of the new 17-mile roadway is around $25 million.

n Mike Gardner, assistant football coach and defensive coordinator at Tabor College, was selected as an AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year. He was one of 500 assistant coaches chosen among 300,000 candidates nationwide.

The Main Street renovation project in Hillsboro is entering its final stage with the laying of asphalt and wiring of street lights expected to be completed by the end of the week. A city-wide celebration is planned for Sept. 4.

The eight-member 2003 class of Leadership Marion County is anticipating its graduation Aug. 25. Members of the class are Carolyn Koehn, Roger O’Neal, Michel Soyez, Jim Elliott, Megan Kilgore, Gina Edwards, Sarah Cope and Tina Novak.

Two Marion High School sophomores, Braden Suffield and Clinton Jeffrey, are participating in a fledgling cadet program under the tutelage of Marion County Sheriff Lee Becker. Both youth have expressed interest in entering the law-enforcement field as a career. The program is...

In the aftermath of the collision two weeks ago that killed two teenagers with local ties at the junction of U.S. highways 50 and 77 just north of Florence, some Marion County residents are circulating a petition demanding an overpass be built at the intersection. They contend the Kansas Department of Transportation plan to put stop signs at the interaction is inadequate.

Henryk Zamojski, a government agricultural official from Pawlowic­ski, Poland, made his fourth visit to sister city Goessel, bringing with him gifts to present to city officials: a map of Poland and the von Goessel family crest. Goessel was named for Polish sea captain Kurt Von Goessel, who acted heroically when his ship, Elbe, was rammed by another ship and sank in the English Channel.

The Hillsboro City Council is proposing a $5 per month surcharge for local electrical users as a way to avoid a mill-levy increase to fund the 2004 city budget. The surcharge would raise an estimated $84,000. Covering the shortfall, caused by state funding cuts, with property taxes would have required an increase of about 6.5 mills.
