n A plea was made for volunteers to help with the next stage of shoreline stabilization at Marion Reservoir planned for Nov. 10. Volunteers would be asked to cut large cedar trees, operate a tool similar to a jack hammer and attach anchor chains around the trunks of trees placed along the shoreline near Cottonwood Point.

n Zane Unruh, 19, of the Goessel High School FFA chapter, was named the national winner of the Proficiency Award Area of Emerging Agriculture Techology—Entrepreneur­ship/Placement at the 2003 national FFA convention in Louisville, Ky., Oct. 31. Unruh’s work has included developing high-tech maps and downloading data to help make the family farm more profitable.

n Historic-high beef prices have prompted the Mennonite Central Committee mobile meat canner to process turkey during this year’s three-day stop at Hillsboro. Beef was going to cost the relief agency $1.74 a pound while turkey cost $1 a pound.

n Harvey County officials visited the Marion County Board of Commissioners this week were granted Marion County support in their struggle to have the Kansas Legisla­ture overturn tax exemption for independent-living units owned by non-profit entities such as nursing homes.

n The Tabor College football team, ranked 13th nationally, beat the University of Saint Mary, 21-12, to improve to 7-0.

n Heavy rains last Wednes­day night, particularly to the west of Hillsboro, caused the South Cottonwood River to overflow its banks on Thursday. Rainfall reports in Hillsboro ranged from 3 to 5 inches.

n Rolland “Bay” Lawrence, a Tabor College standout football player from the early 1970s who went on to become an all-pro in the National Football League, had his Bluejay jersey retired at Tabor’s homecoming game with Friends University. In January, Lawrence was inducted into the National Association of Inter­collegiate Athletics Hall of Fame.

n Deb Miller, state secretary of transportation, told Florence city leaders that constructing a roundabout would be the safest financially feasible solution for the intersection of U.S. highways 50 and 77. About 22 roundabouts have been constructed in the state to this point.

n Matt Dalke began work as the new director for the Hills­boro Recreation Commission. The Hillsboro native had been working previously in Newton, where he was a field maintenance supervisor for the city’s parks department.

n Congressman Jerry Moran was on hand to present a new Purple Heart to Albert Klose of Hillsboro at a brief ceremony at the American Legion Hall. Klose said his original medal was accidentally ruined by an infant member of the extended family...
