n A winter storm on Friday dumped 7 to 8 inches of snow on the area. With little wind, the thick blanket of white made for a picturesque outdoors and had many people humming, “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.”

n A second tiger was killed by Marion County Sheriff Officer Sgt. Jeff Soyez in the early morning hours of Friday after a 1 a.m. call from its owner, Chris McDonald, at the place where he confines his animals at 40th and Timber. Sheriff Lee Becker said the male tiger...

n Hillsboro City Admini­strator Steve Garrett told the city council that it isn’t city government’s responsibility to determine whether the community needs the new “Windover Hillsboro” housing development being proposed for the city’s north side. Garrett said the city’s only duty is to make sure any new development is done according to city codes and requirements. The 135-home development is being proposed by private investors from Lawrence.

n City Administrator Steve Garrett gave the city council its first look at a contract being offered to the city of Lehigh that would make the Hillsboro Fire Department responsible for Lehigh’s fire protection. Lehigh would pay Hillsboro a set fee to provide the services.

n The Christmas season officially began in Hillsboro with two familiar events: the annual Schaeffler House Open House and the Sund With Santa photo opportunity sponsored by Ameri­can Legion Auxiliary. The rooms in the Schaeffler House were decorated in varying themes and the 100 or so people who came by were asked to vote for their favorite. The front two living room decorated by Prairie Flowers recevied the most votes.

n Eight Hillsboro High School students were inducted into the Trojan Chapter of the National Honor Society on Dec. 1. They were Gina Andrews, Katie Batlzer, Marissa Diener, Sara Hamm, Kelsey Kaufman, Caleb Marsh, Emily Railsback and Emily Ratzlaff.

n Prairie Arts, a new arts and crafts store, opened Nov. 1 in Burns...

n JoAnn Knak, Hillsboro, is planning to retire after 22 years as director of Marion County Emergency Medical Services. He last day will be Dec. 19. She plans to continue to take calls for the Hillsboro EMS crew after she steps down, teach cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid, give talks to community and civic groups, work as assistant coroner with the county deputy coroner and work for the state as an examiner for emergency-care candidates.

n Charitable organizations from four communities in Marion County received checks totaling $8,150 Saturday from the planner s of the 10th annual Marion County Toy Run that was held Nov. 1. The communities of Peabody, Goessel, Marion and Hillsboro were represented.

n Alumni of Lehigh High School erected a monument to their former school in late October. The structures that comprised the facility were demolished in 2002. Lehigh High School was closed in 1966 in the consolidation move with Hillsboro and Durham. The unified school district used the facility for a junior high for several additional years. Bricks from the original building, constructed in 1920, were used for the memorial, which stands on the former school property.

n Tabor College is in the process of presenting its $10.5 million capital campaign to the community of Hillsboro and Marion County. At the heart of the campaign is a proposed new dormitory.
