Five years agon Marion County commissioners signed a final agreement that enables the cleanup of the old landfill southwest of Marion to Kansas Department of Health and Environment standards.
n The Tabor College men’s and women’s track teams each finished second at the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference track meet in Winfield.
n The James Thomas Invitational was rained out for the second consecutive year.

Five years agon Demolition workers began to remove the charred shell of the building formerly used by the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church. The building was destroyed by fire March 7.
n Matt and Judy Krebs, and daughters Landry, 5, and Anika, 6 months, are preparing to leave Hillsboro next week to serve in a mission setting in violence-torn Kosovo.
n The USD 410 Board of Education, needing to reduce its budget for the coming school year, voted to nonrenew the contracts of teachers Michelle Goldsby, Sunshine McEwen and Michelle Faul.

n About 200 children participated in the annual Kiwanis Club Easter Egg Hunt on a cloudy and damp Saturday. Some 3,000 pieces of candy were distributed.n The owners of the Hillsboro Free Press have purchased the Hesston Record and plan to return the online-only newspaper to print beginning May 5.
n Low voter turnout characterized the April 6 local election in Hillsboro and Marion. Byron McCarty and Shelby Dirks won uncontested seats to the city council in Hillsboro while Martin Tice outpolled Troy Leith in a race for mayor that was only technically contested. Leith’s name was on the ballot, but he had withdrawn because of a move out of town.

n Local school districts in Marion County have the opportunity to implement a new program called Bully-Proofing Your School. Peabody-Burns USD 398 is the first school district in the county to implement the program.n John Fast has been hired as the new superintendent for Goessel schools. He succeeds Chet Roberts, effective at the end of the fiscal year. Fast will retain kindergarten through sixth-grade principal duties.
n Tabor College men’s basketball team defeated Friends University 66-61 in the semifinals of the post-season KCAC tournament. With the win, Tabor advanced to the championship game against Sterling.
