Five years agon The 2004 Marion County Relay for Life drew about 130 participants and generated a record $24,773 to help fund the battle against cancer; last year’s total was $16,900. The event went from Friday evening to Saturday morning at the Marion stadium track.
n Central National Bank contributed a check for $100,000 to Hillsboro Community Medical Center. The money will be applied to the $250,000 in tax credits the hospital has been authorized for the construction of a new front entrance and other renovations.

Five years agon Rainfall totals of more than 12 inches in Marion County contributed to significant flooding on Saturday. Three people were rescued along Remington Road after a mother and two children were trapped when their vehicle hydroplaned off the roadway. In a separate incident, a truck driver and her 12-year-old son were extricated from semi-truck cab after she tried unsuccessfully to drive over a submerged portion of Kanza Road.
n John Fast led his first meeting of the Goessel school board as district superintendent July 12. He previously had served as elementary school principal.

Five years agon Hillsboro Community Medical Center has been awarded $250,000 in Community Service Tax Credits from the Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing. The funds will be used to make the facility, particularly the front entrance, handicapped accessible.
n The first conviction as a result of DNA testing in Kanss is returning to Marion County. The attorney for Oliver K. Smith, who was convicted of the 1987 rape and murder of Shelly Prine near Goessel, is asking that her client be permitted to have new DNA testing. The special prosecutor retained by Marion County said he is doubtful the effort will shed new light on the case.

Five years agon The Hillsboro City Council voted unanimously to keep open the 100 block of South Washington. Representatives from the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church had inquired about closing it in order to create a larger unified campus on which to build a new meetinghouse after losing the former one in a March fire.
n Congressman Jerry Moran said he would support federal legislation that would fund better research into the cause of, and ways to combat, algae blooms, such as the ones that have plagued Marion Reservoir the past two summers.
n The USD 410 Board of Education decided to refinance its bond debt on the middle-school building. Because of low interest rates, the move could save the district $46,000 to $56,000.
