Karina Torres and Ethan Oborny read a poem by Robert Hayden to residents of Parkside Homes in Hillsboro last Thursday. They are students in the English III class taught by Bob Woelk. The class is studying American poets, and the students were invited by Parkside to read some of their favorite works to the residents. Thirty-eight students participated, with one group coming in the morning and the other in the afternoon. “We just wrapped up a unit on American poets where students had to give a presentation to the rest of the class about their poets: biographies, style, subject matter, etc.,” said Woelk. “Penni Funk (Parkside staff member) contacted me about a month ago to see if there was something we could do for a poetry week at the home. It worked out great that we could time this so perfectly.”
