County students feted for their achievements at colleges, universities

Several students from Marion County in recent weeks have completed degrees or been recognized for their academic work in colleges and universities around the state and country.

• Meghan Jost, Hillsboro, was one of two students to receive the Spring 2012 Distin­guished Nursing Award during the Newman University Nurses Pinning ceremony May 11.

The award is given to a graduating nursing student who has a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade-point average and demonstrates an exceptional commitment to the nursing profession and involvement in the Newman and greater Wichita communities.

She also was the Graduating Cardinal Newman Scholar and a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.

• Caitlin Reimer, Hillsboro, is one of 67 baccalaureate students of the Washburn University School of Nursing who were honored during a recognition and pinning ceremony May 12.

Reimer is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and Alpha Lambda Delta national honor society.

• Included among about 2,825 students completing degree requirements at Kansas State University this spring are 12 students from Marion County.

• Durham: JuliAnne Chisholm, bachelor of science in athletic training;

• Hillsboro: Nathan Hiebert, master of science in family studies and human services; Andrea Jost, bachelor of science in family studies and human services; Matthew Morford, bachelor of science in agriculture;

• Lost Springs: Tye Remy, bachelor of science; Tad Remy, bachelor of science in education; Nicole R. Stenzel, bachelor of science in apparel and textiles;

• Marion: Nellie Hill, bachelor of science in agriculture; Daniel Kraus, master of landscape architecture; Jason Matz, master of science in agronomy;

• Peabody: Kristin Marie Waner, bachelor of science; Blair A. Williams, master of music.

• Among the students who completed degree requirements at Kansas University this spring are five students from Marion County.

• Burns: Jacob Hadley, doctor of pharmacy.

• Hillsboro: Karen Elliott, master of social work; Mary Kliewer, doctor of pharmacy; and Alisa (Jost) Schmidt, doctor of medicine, who will complete her residency training in family medicine at the KU School of Medicine–Salina.

• Goessel: Melinda Stucky, master of social work.

• Marion: Lauren Helmer, bachelor of social work.

• The 314 candidates for graduation at Cloud County Com­munity College this spring included Samantha Jo Lee Seifert, Lost Springs, associate of arts; and Ashley M. Polston, Ramona, associate of science.

• Jonathan King, Hillsboro, earned a place on the Hesston College dean’s list (GPA of 3.90 to 4.00) while Neal Brubaker, Goessel, and Sarah Unruh, Durham, were named to the honor roll (3.50 to 3.89).

• Eastern Mennonite Univer­sity in Harrisonburg, Va., recognized three students from Marion County on its spring dean’s list: Jessica Goertzen, a junior liberal arts and elementary education licensure, pre-K-6 major from Goessel; Travis Riesen, a senior biology and secondary education licensure, 6-12 major from Hillsboro; and Anna Woelk, a senior social work major from Hillsboro.

The dean’s list requires a GPA of 3.750 or above and at least 12 semester hours of credit.
