Twelve students in the Culinary Essentials class at Hillsboro High School competed in a yeast-bread competition last week. Each student came up with a recipe after having completed a session on yeast breads. Two winners were selected: David Nelson (top) with his peanut-butter whole-wheat cinnamon rolls and J.D. Schmidt (middle) with his Focaccia herb bread. Judges were Mary Beth Bowers (bottom, left), representing the Kansas Wheat Commission, and Lori Borg, an experienced bread maker, 4-H parent and substitute teacher for the Family and Consumer Science program. The contest was “an overwhelming success,” according to Monica Leihy, instructor.
