HHS Students receive Scholarships

 Ashley Stout, Hillsboro High senior, received the top scholarship of
$1,000 from Sunflower Bank of McPherson at the close of the bank’s
first Community Ambassadors program. Awards of $1,000, $500 and $250
were awarded based in part on a contemplative essay as well as academic
achievement throughout the year. Nine area students participated in the
program, which is designed to encourage young people to consider their
home town as a viable place to live and work after completing their

 Hannah Marsh, Hillsboro High senior, was selected to receive a Sam Walton Community Scholarship of $1,000 by the Wal-Mart store in McPherson. Marsh also was selected for a $1,500 scholarship by the Best Buy Children’s Foundation, based on community service and academic achievement of for student seeking a post-high education. Marsh plans to attend Wichita State University.

Hillsboro Community Medical Center has awarded a $500 scholarship to Hillsboro High senior Janet Glahn. The scholarship program began in 1993 and is awarded each year to an HHS graduate who is pursuing a health-related career. Glahn, daughter of Stephen and Michelle Glahn, plans to attend Kansas State University and major in food science, then attend the University of Kansas Medical School. She has already taken classes to become a certified nurse aide and certified medication aide.

 Hillsboro High senior JuliAnne Chisholm, pictured with Lt. Governor Mark Parkinson, received a Governor’s Scholar Award May 6 in Topeka, awarded to the top academic 1 percent of Kansas high school seniors. Goessel High senior Janessa Wedel also was selected to attend. The program is coordinated by the Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force and funded by the Kansas Bankers Association and other private-sector businesses.
