Hispanic church leader will be CMBS speaker

Honoring the 75th anniversary of the Latin America Mennonite Brethren (LAMB) Conference, Rolando Mireles, Rio Grande City, Texas, will be the keynote speaker at the Center for Mennonite Brethren Studies annual meeting Saturday, April 27.The CMBS will also offer a tour of area sites of historic significance.
Mireles has been active within the church for the past 41 years, and has served in many leadership positions including chairman, treasurer, secretary and board member of the LAMB conference, a member of national conference boards, the Tabor College Board of Directors and the International Community of Mennonite Brethren.

MHS musicians score at regionals

Marion High Schools Music Department received several “I” ratings Saturday at the regional music festival at Tabor College.
Qualifying for the state festival by receiving a “I” rating are: vocal soloists Jennifer Fruechting, Isaac baldwin, Nick Meyer, John Lind, Adam Kjellin, and Shyla Harris; Flute soloist Reann Hamm; and the Girls Ensemble, Boys Ensemble and the Marion Singers.
Students receiving a “II” rating were: vocal soloist Nicholas Davies; clarinet soloist Jennifer Fruechting; trombone soloist John Lind, and alto sax soloist Caitlyn Maloney.

Hillsboro High School vocal and instrumental students competed Saturday at the regional music festival hosted by Tabor College.Individuals and groups who received a “I” rating will advance to the state music festival April 27 at Southeast of Saline High School.
For Hillsboro, that includes: the mixed trio (band); flute soloist Kennedy Klein; vocal soloists Ashley Bartel, Tyler Burst, Tyler Funk, Abigail Kliewer, Daniele Melton and Daniel Nelson; Spirit-N-Celebration, SNC Women, SNC Men and the Mixed Vocal Ensemble.
Receiving “II” ratings were French horn soloist Allison Gray; vocal soloists Jordan Fryhover, Erika Just, Kate Litchfield and Taytum Miller; and the men’s and women’s vocal ensembles.

Chess students compete in Chicago

Matthew Denholm, second from right, and his Kansas teammates show off the third-place trophy they won in the 16-and-under division at the recent Intercontinental Chess Championships in Chicago. Denholm and Jordan Fryhover, both freshmen members of the Hillsboro Chess Guild, competed in the fourth annual event in which 16 teams from around the world, including Russia, competed with three high school teams representing Kansas. Fryhover’s 18-and-under team placed second overall. The boys were invited and sponsored by the Karpov International School of Chess in Lindsborg for their outstanding 2012-13 competitive season.
