HHS students compete in regionals

Hillsboro High School vocal and instrumental students competed Saturday at the regional music festival hosted by Tabor College.

Individuals and groups who received a “I” rating will advance to the state music festival April 27 at Southeast of Saline High School.

Chess students compete in Chicago

Matthew Denholm, second from right, and his Kansas teammates show off the third-place trophy they won in the 16-and-under division at the recent Intercontinental Chess Championships in Chicago. Denholm and Jordan Fryhover, both freshmen members of the Hillsboro Chess Guild, competed in the fourth annual event in which 16 teams from around the world, including Russia, competed with three high school teams representing Kansas. Fryhover’s 18-and-under team placed second overall. The boys were invited and sponsored by the Karpov International School of Chess in Lindsborg for their outstanding 2012-13 competitive season.

 

 

 

410 board hears from young artist

Fifth-grade artist Callie Arnold attended Monday’s USD 410 Board of Education meeting to share her experience winning the Kansas State Arbor Day Poster Contest.

“It expressed my artistic ability,” Callie said about her poster, titled “Trees are terrific and Kansas forests are too.”

Science teacher Rod Just said each year he has students create posters for the contest, adding this year was his first to have first-place winner since teaching at Hillsboro Elementary School.

Callie’s poster was chosen as first place out of 1,050 posters submitted, Just said.

Parents Chad and Melissa Arnold and principal Evan Yoder attended the board meeting with Callie.

Josh Richert signs to run at Tabor College next year
