HHS band travels to KC, competes at Worlds of Fun festival

The Hillsboro High School Band traveled to Kansas City May 4-5. After a Saturday lunch at Brobeck’s Barbecue, the band visited the American Jazz Museum and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum before spending time at Oak Park Mall. In the evening the band attended a performance at Martin City Melodrama. On Sunday, they competed at the Worlds of Fun Festival of Music against bands from Kansas and Nebraska. Student speakers address grads

The students, their families and MHS faculty were all smiles as tribute was paid to the hard work and accomplishments of the graduates.
The valedictorians and salutatorian addressed their classmates.
Isaac Baldwin, this year’s salutatorian, spoke about how one of the greatest thinkers, Albert Einstein, struggled in school.
“I think we can all agree that Einstein was pretty intelligent, so I am going to use him to back myself up when I say what I am about to say.

Ag Awareness Days draws 90 third-grade students

About 90 third-graders from Hillsboro and Marion schools toured 14 different educational stations that were led by FFA members. The topics ranged from farm animals to farm machinery.
The animals were provided by the FFA students and the machinery by Prairieland Partners and Straub International, both from Marion.
“Our goals for the day are to educate elementary children about the types of production agriculture in our county and to help them be aware of some of the safety issues involved in working around this machinery or with animals,” said Mark meyer, adviser.

Hillsboro trio earns state music medal

Kennedy Klein, Allison Gray and Marah Franz (from left), members of the Mixed Winds Trio, comprised three of the four medalists from Hillsboro High School at the Class 3A State Music Festival at Southeast of Saline April 27. Participants were evaluated using a rubric with a low rating of “V” and a highest rating of “I,” with only those receiving “I” ratings earning a medal. The Mixed Winds Trio performed Beethoven’s “German Dance.” Kennedy earned a second medal as a flute soloist, performing Victor Herbert’s “Serenade.”
Geis, Roberts receive 4-H scholarships

Lauren Geis and Bryce Roberts, a pair of Hillsboro High School seniors, were selected to receive $500 scholarships from the Marion County 4-H Endowment Fund. Pictured with them is Lyman Adams, Endowment Fund president. The winners were selected on their outstanding involvement in 4-H work.
