Tabor College musicians featured at Newton concert

Two Tabor College alumni will be featured performers at the upcoming Newton Mid-Kan­sas Orchestra Winter Classics Concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, in the Newton High School Auditorium, 900 W, 12th St.

Jesse Warkentin, pianist, singer, composer and musical director, will be the guest artist performing “Rhapsody in Blue,” the popular 1924 composition by George Gershwin.

Two Tabor College musicians will be featured performers at the upcoming Newton Mid-Kan­sas Orchestra Winter Classics Concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, in the Newton High School Auditorium, 900 W, 12th St.

Jesse Warkentin, pianist, singer, composer and musical director, will be the guest artist performing “Rhapsody in Blue,” the popular 1924 composition by George Gershwin.

Warkentin, a 2002 graduate of Tabor, is known for his work with Music Theatre of Wichita and Music Theatre for Young People.

The concert also will give the audience the opportunity to hear the winners of the 2012 Young Soloist Competition.

Year brings challenge, achievement

Area school district experienced another year of academic achievements and challenges during 2012.

JANUARY

Goessel Elementary School again received the Governor’s Achievement Award for being among the top 5 percent of the 182 elementary schools in Kansas.

Ron Braun was hired as the new vice president for advancement at Tabor College, effective Jan. 23. He fills the position vacated by Jim Elliott, who accepted a position with Moody Bible College.

The Learning in Retirement program at Tabor College will meet on Fridays instead of Mondays starting with the spring semester.

Goessel board hires contractor

After reviewing a proposed plan for the project at its Dec. 10 meeting, the USD 411-Goessel school board approved a contract with Loyd Construction for its facilities renovation and expansion project.

Architect Josh Walker, representing Loyd Construction, said plans for the project had changed somewhat after meetings with staff.

He explained renovation plans for rooms currently in the high school. The art room would become the weight room. He said the tiered steps would be removed, and new flooring and rubberized mats would be installed. Art would be moved to the current science room.
