Walk this way...when you walk to school every day

Students from Marion Elementary School participate in International Walk to School Day. About 75 children from Marion and Hillsboro elementary schools participated in the event, sponsored by Safe Kids Marion County. For the eighth year, volunteers walked children to school in order to demonstrate important safety behaviors. Students from MES participated in the event Oct. 3, and students from HES participated Oct. 4. In addition to walking to school, Safe Kids Marion County conducted walkability checks, speed enforcement campaigns and other activities to teach children important walking safety tips.

 

HHS principal to step down after the current school year

Hillsboro High School principal Dale Honeck announced he will retire at the end of the current school year.

Consequently, the Board of Education for Unified School District 410 approved his resignation at its regular meeting Monday evening Oct. 8.

“We owe you a couple of thanks for a couple of big things you’ve done for us this year,” board president Rod Koons told Honeck prior to the vote. “You epitomize that you care about your kids and your school.”

Superintendent Doug Huxman updated the board on the timeline for facility improvements.

The district’s transportation services have already moved to a temporary location, Huxman said.

Tabor's Tona Leiker honored for work in nursing education

Tona L. Leiker, dean of the School of Adult & Graduate Studies and chair of the Nursing Department at Tabor College Wichita, has been recognized as one of the nation’s top scholars in nursing education.

A doctoral candidate at the University of Kansas School of Nursing, Leiker is one of four doctoral nursing students in the nation to win the inaugural $2,500 Dissertation Scholarship for Nursing Education Scholars from the National League of Nursing.

“It is a great honor to receive this award,” said Leiker, who received her scholarship in September.

Leiker is pursuing a doctorate in nursing with a health professions education certificate and emphasis in organizational leadership.

11 HHS students to join National Honor Society

Hillsboro High School will induct 11 students into the Trojan Chapter of the National Honor Society on Monday, Oct. 29.

The induction is an annual candle-lit ceremony conducted at the Hillsboro Memorial Park Scout Building.

The 11 students are: senior Grant Schneider and juniors Kelsey Bartel, Ben Gottsch, Abi Humber, Cassie Kroeker, David Loewen, Nicholas Mueller, Heidi Schroeder, Clay Shewey, Jet Skiles and David Winter.

The National Honor Society ranks as one of the oldest and most prestigious organizations for high school students. Chapters exist in three-fourths of the nation’s high schools.

To be eligible for membership, students must be a junior or senior and have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.70...
