HHS Chess Guild 2nd at tournament

The Hillsboro High School Chess Guild team placed second in the high school division at the Canton-Galva K-12 chess tournament Saturday, Oct. 27. Team members included (from left) Dakota Peterson, Ben Bosworth, Matt Richert, Josh Elliott, Allister Young, James Letterman and Justin King. The Chess Guild will host its first KSCA chess tournament Saturday, Dec. 8 in the middle school gym. The tournament is open to all K-12 students and costs $5. For more information contact...

FCCLA members attend district

Twelve members from the Hillsboro chapter of FCCLA attended District G fall leadership academy Oct. 31 in Peabody.

Katrina Muzyka was recognized as the chapter’s “Outstand­ing Member of the Year.” The chapter’s community service project with Victory in the Valley bears for cancer patients was shared with the district.

The following members from HHS were honored during the event: April Young, Viktoria Bichet, Katrina Muzyka, Ashlyn Simmons and Stephanie Abbott.

Also attending: Brittany Davis, Becky Steketee, Evana Holtsclaw, Rhiannon Janzen, Jayme Claassen, Megan Chizek, Vanessa Romero, adviser Monica Leihy.

 

Tabor's Nikkel honored by seminary for work in mental health

Tabor College President Larry Nikkel’s success in serving the cause of mental health and was applauded Oct. 12 in Fresno, Calif., when he was recognized by the Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary as the 2007 Mental Health and Integration Honoree.

“I know of no person who better emulates with his life the joining of the spirit and the psyche,” said former seminary president and longtime friend Larry Martens, who introduced Nikkel at the ceremony, which was held during a two-day seminar at the seminary titled, “The Psyche and the Spirit.”

After receiving his bachelor’s degree in history and sociology from Tabor College in 1964, President Nikkel spent three years as a secondary school teacher before he left the field to work at...

Day off will mark 410 "Excellence"

To celebrate the achievement of the “Standard of Excellence” testing achievement by all three schools within USD 410, students, faculty and staff will be granted an extra day of vacation around Thanksgiving Day.

The USD Board of Education decided at a special meeting Oct. 22 to approve a request from the administrative team to consider the change to the 2007-08 school calendar.

The recommendation came in response to Hillsboro Elemen­tary School, Hillsboro Middle School and Hillsboro High School all receiving the “Stand­ard of Excellence” as individual buildings.

“This is a major achievement for the students, teachers and USD 410 as a district,” Superin­tendent Doug Huxman said.
