Tabor College to dedicate newest residence hall Feb. 23

Tabor College is planning a dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting for the newly completed Harms Residence Hall at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23. The public is welcome to attend. The 16-unit residence hall is located at 502 E. B St. in Hillsboro. Guided tours of the facility will be available for the public following the ceremony. The building was made possible by a donation from Wilmer Harms, an opthalmologist from North Newton, in honor of his late wife, Esther. Harms is the founding...

USD 410 board members recognized publicly for service

Members of the USD 410 Board of Education received framed certificates of appreciation at halftime of the boys’ basketball game Feb. 1 between Hillsboro and Lyons at Brown Gymnasium. Collectively, the members have 59 years of experience on the board, according to Superintendent Steve Noble. “That is veteran leadership that deserves recognition,” Noble said. Goessel Scholars Bowl team claims regional title

The Goessel High School Scholars Bowl team won its regional tournament last Thursday at LeRoy. After advancing from pool play with a 3-2 record, the team of David Hesse, Bjorn Schumann, Heath Goertzen, Mark Schmidt, Jo Hoffman and Ben Wiens posted five straight victories in the championship round to claim first place. The team will compete for the state championship Feb. 9 at Flinthills. Coaches for the team are Wes Schmidt-Tieszen and Gina Bergin. Private seed money should keep Goessel garden growing

Students at Goessel Elemen­tary School discovered Thursday that it takes more then good soil, seed, water and oxygen to grow a school garden.

Starting this year, it also takes the financial help of local donors.

With four students equipped with garden tools stationed nearby, and the rest of the student body looking on Thursday afternoon, Kerry Wat­son, representing Mid Kan­sas Cooperative Association, presented the school with some seed money—literally and figuratively.

MKC’s check for $500 will be enough to cover program expenses for most of this school year and perhaps into the fall, according to John Fast, Goessel superintendent.

“I’m hoping one or two more donations will get us beyond that,” he added.

Centre girls make it to first post-Title IX state tourney

After nearly 50 years of meager opportunities, girls’ basketball dramatically changed June 23, 1972. On that day, President Richard Nixon signed into law Title IX. In brief, the new law stated, “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied benefits of, or subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity that has received federal financial assistance.”

The new law applied to the entire school or institution if any part of that school’s budget received federal funds. Although athletics received little direct federal funding, it was nonetheless considered subject to the law. Girls’ basketball was back in business, but not without many detractors who...
