25 area seniors invited to KU scholars dinner Sept. 19

Twenty-five students from the six high schools in the Free Press distribution area will be honored Wednesday, Sept. 19, by the University of Kansas Alumni Association and KU Endowment.

Seniors from high schools in Marion, McPherson and Rice counties will be recognized for their academic achievements and named Kansas Honor Scholars at a 6:30 p.m. dinner program in McPherson.

The Kansas Honors Program began in 1971 and has recognized more than 100,000 students. Scholars rank in the top 10 percent of their high school senior classes and are selected regardless of curricula, majors, occupational plans or higher-education goals.

PBHS officers attend FCCLA training event in Hutchinson

Peabody-Burns Jr-Sr High School chapter officers of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) recently participated in a training meeting for district officers at the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson.

Officers were led through a problem-solving activity with Cosmosphere employees, then attended break-out sessions on fund-raising, membership and community service.

Cathy Silvers, PBHS advisor as well as district advisor this year, accompanied Debra Coe, president, Samantha Pickens, vice president and Erica Fredericl, secretary and student council representative, to the meeting.

Chamber trio concert is part of Tabor prof's faculty award focus

SheilaSchmitt 35.jpg Sheila Schmitt This year’s Tabor College Faculty Recital, planned for 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, in the chapel-auditorium, will feature the chamber trio of violinist Adrienne Dough­erty, cellist Susan Mayo, and pianist Sheila Schmitt.

Schmitt is associate professor of piano and piano pedagogy at Tabor. As a recipient of the 2007-08 Distinguished Faculty Award, the college is reducing her teaching schedule to give her more time to practice for public performances.

“Anytime you have more time to practice and put yourself into the preparation of a piece, it’s going to have more thought put into it and, hopefully, be much more musical,” Schmitt said.

Six teachers begin at Centre, three at Marion and Goessel

Anne Collett begins her first year teaching this term. Her students are grades five through eight for special education. Collett resides with husband Keith and their three children in Marion.

Janis Peterson teaches seventh grade geography and eighth grade history. She and her husband, Pete, live in Burdick.

First-year band instructor is Chris Waclawick of Olathe. He earned his teaching degree at Missouri State University. He plans to commute to Centre from Manhattan.
