Tabor planning three concerts during this holiday season

The Tabor College Music Department will host three public concerts this Christmas season at the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church, 300 Prairie Pointe.

The concert choir and community orchestra, conducted by Brad Vogel, associate professor of choral music, will present Handel’s “Messiah” at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2.

First performed in Dublin, Ireland, on April 13, 1742, “Messiah” is Handel’s most famous composition and is among the most popular works in Western choral literature...

Two from HHS named to district honor band

Two band students from Hillsboro High School were selected to be in the South Central District Honor Band.

Clay Shewey was selected as fourth chair percussion and J. Michael Hiebert as sixth chair percussion.

The pair auditioned against 24 other students from the south central Kansas area. Spencer Brown was selected as the first alternate out of 18 who audtioned.

“This is the first time students have made the District Honor band in about 10 years,” said Gregg Walker, director of instrumental music. “It is very difficult to prepare and compete against all those who tried out. This is quite an honor.”

 

HHS vocalists chosen for KMEA honor choirs

 Three Hillsboro High School freshmen were selected to sing in the Kansas Music Educators Middle Level State Honor Choir at the KMEA In-Service Workshop in February. Jonathan Stepanek, Hayley Pankratz, and Justin Houser were chosen for the choir based on recorded auditions. Live auditions for the KMEA South Central District Honor Choirs were held Nov. 3. The honor choirs will perform Saturday, Dec. 1, at Wichita State University. FFAers place well at district

Leaders for the Marion-Florence FFA chapter participated in the South Central District FFA Leadership Conference at Chaparral High School on Tuesday, Nov. 6.

The conference consisted of competitions in three areas: parliamentary procedure, FFA information, and ritual.

Marion placed fifth in the FFA information contest, fifth in the ritual contest, and sixth in parliamentary procedure.

Hank Collett placed second and Sam Erhlich was eighth individually in FFA information. Collett also was named to the master ritual team as vice president.

Combined placings among the three contests allowed the chapter to place fifth overall out of 24 teams in the South Central District.

MHS 'Beauty & Beast' debuts Friday Night

Marion High School’s fall production of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” will open at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at the Marion City Auditorium.

Repeat performances are planned for 7 p.m., Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Reserved seating is required for the Friday and Saturday performances. Tickets are available at The County Seat in Marion and at the door. Sunday tickets will be sold only at the door

Tickets for adults will be $3 while tickets for children 12 and under will be $2.
